Okay, I'm now beginning to wonder why I bother differentiating between FW and eReader as at neither site was I able to buy TC in (Secure) Mobipocket format. Well, there *was* the fact that I'd have paid $18.99 through eReader and I 'only' got socked for $16.11 through FW. Now the stupidity of paying that much for an ebook version when I could have purchased it for $6.99 at the bookstore in paperback or even paid just $3.50 for a 'used' mmpb at one of our local used book stores.

Sure, for the time being (and there's no set date when all this 'goodness' will end) I 'get' a 100% micropay rebate - but that's just another way of saying that somewhere down the line I get a discount on some other book - as I *must* cough up my hard-earned money to them for a future 'promise'. I don't *expect* FW to fail between now and Monday, but what if it does? All my micropay credits disappear. That means I'll have paid 'better than paperback' for a previously released title.

Now John Sargent of MacMillan would like me, and you, to believe that this more-than-doubling of the ebook prices over paper books to actually 'cost' the publishers more and return less of a 'profit' but only a congenital idiot would believe such crap. I am definitely NOT a congenital idiot - thus I fully smell the ripe, rotting aroma arising from the new pricing policies that allow Grisham's publisher to vastly overcharge the readers on an older title. Can you?

As an aside, around Christmas I bought about 35 books from Fictionwise and used a number of their 100% after rebate deals. Bought the Twilight Series for my wife and Tolkien's books for 100% off. Also bought the Chronicles of Narnia, 9 Robin Hobb books and others. All of the 100% deals were on my credit card, along with a Buywise membership, for a total of $115. Since they were running a massive sale at the time (something like 35% Micropay on all titles) + my 15% Buywise discount, I was able to buy all of the titles I wanted and still have about $60 left in Micropay. 35 books for $115 is a good deal, but 35 for $55? Awesome. And I even missed their Buywise deal by a day (100% of Buywise back as Micropay). That would have been another $30 back!

As long as they carry books I like, I'm comfortable having in-store credit. I bought my first ebook reader from FW over 5 years ago and they still seem like they are going strong.

My local library just got ALL of Grisham's eBooks in ePub. Very nice. Now I can start A Time to Kill.

Here's a little correspondence I received:

All Random House international books will be available in Australia provided
that we have global rights.

In the case of John Grisham, the books he makes available to us as ebooks
will be available here.

There may be some time lag because of the production issues involved in
converting to ebook format.

For other books, Random House has a policy to make as many books available in
ebook form as quickly as possible in line with our legal obligations.

This means that backlist titles for which we do not hold digital rights must
be negotiated with authors and their agents. We are certainly doing our best
to facilitate availability.
