My money is still in my wallet. If you read the whole thread, you would know that I'm not pre-ordering the iPad.

People are pre-ordering the Plastic Logic reader which is an unknown device and those people haven't received nearly the flack that people have ordering the iPad.

Segway was built right in my hometown. Considering the price tag, people that were buying them sight unseen were doing it for the novelty.

Maybe because most of that action happened when the pre-orders first became available. That's been several weeks ago, so it's not at the front of the pre-order buzz (and it can't be pre-ordered anymore according to the web site).

I'll get an iPad when all of my magazines and newspapers are available on it. For books, I'll stick with my kindle (at home) and iPhone (on the go) for now.

They just added this last sentence to the website - you can load your free epubs to itunes and sync them. I suspect they emphasize the free so that you don't think you can purchase at Sony (or B&N, or Kobo) and load those. Of course, we know different

That's kinda what I'm hoping for in the coming generation of e-book readers and/or tablets. Color, magazines, news, etc. as well as books.

Definitely worth a try - and it's probably as much use for cooking on as it is for reading on

Lots of folks on this board bought original Sony Readers from the U.S. knowing full well that they were unsupported and without warranty for the countries they lived in; it's what people have to do sometimes if they want something. I wouldn't presume to speak for anyone else, but I would hazard a guess that like me, the folks pre-ordering iPad have looked at the published specs and find them adequate for their envisaged use. Unlike me though, they can per-order, so it's another big fat <shrug> from me

Exactly! I bought my first Cybook sight unseen (for iPad money, as I said in another thread) and as far as I know there still isn't any way of getting your hands on one in a shop or store; you only have to look back a few years to see that this was the only way of buying an e-ink device - and still is, in many cases.

Cheers, Pete

I know . Barnes & Noble sells the Nook but I have yet to actually see one in a B&N store. I've never seen a Kindle in the wild either.

I'm leaning toward buying an iPad after they come out since I will still be able to read all my epubs that I currently read on my iPhone.

Nothing wrong with pre-ordering. If it's not what people want, there will certainly be ways of offloading them with minimal hassle.

I'm not pre-ordering one, and am probably going to hold out until summer before I make any decisions about a next device. Should be fun to swing by Computex in June and try out a bunch of different stuff.
