About the only "multi-task" I think would be nice would be to listen to music while doing 1 other thing (not watching movie). Can you do that on an iPod? I expect you can. If so I would expect the iPad would allow for that too.

You're not much of a computer person are you? Or perhaps I missed your sarcasm. On my computer I'm constantly surfing the web/chatting on IM/listening to music. I'll occasionally check my email at the same time. Now I wouldn't listen to music and watch a movie at the same time (that would be silly) but I would appreciate the chance to chat to a friend at the same time as watching a movie

Some lucky family member will probably get my 600 when I replace it with a 64g/no3g iPad.

I will keep my Sony 505, perhaps upgrading to the 900 at some point. I love the Sony, and am thrilled to be able to have library books for free.

I will, however, be buying the IPad. I really, really enjoy using my iphone apps. A larger screen will be great. And I will read books on it as well. Looking forward to having both.

I'm very much a computer person - I work in the industry, but I have to disagree with the sentiment expressed here for a couple of reasons:

(1) Those of us who constantly spend all of our time multi-tasking (e.g., reading the web in 25 tabs, chatting, outlook, Visual Studio, a couple terminals, etc), often find that we end up going "around the bend" so to speak. That is, we appreciate more and more devices and software which helps us focus on what is really important. For example, I've known many people who download software which disables their internet for X amount of time while they do something else more important.

(2) This is not to say we disavow multi-tasking altogether. Even the iPhone is very good at doing the tasks you've mentioned at the same time - it checks your email and chats for you and notifies you if there is anything new. Then *you* can decide if it is worth stopping whatever you are doing to go answer the other thing. Listening to music is not a problem; you can have music behind any other software.

I'm not going to say that lacking the kind of multi-tasking other operating systems offer is the best thing since sliced bread, but I do think that it was a well-thought-out decision. It just happens to not be the verdict some people think they want.

I wouldn't worry myself too much on this topic anyway. I'm sure the iPad will support it in OS 4.0.

I have read up on the Apple iPad and it does not give enough even for the $500.00 they are asking for it. If you ask me, they should have made the iPad the size of the PRS-600, and maybe I would consider it. It's almost the size of the GRiD PC Tablet that came out 10 years ago, and I fell for that big mistake then. The GRiD PC Tablet was also targeted to the medical community, and it went nowhere.

The emotional excitement wore off. Initially thought I would get the 2nd generation one but I've changed my mind. There's nothing magical or revolutionary about the iPad. If it had handwriting recognition or at least allow for handwritten annotations then it would be worthy of consideration for a netbook alternative. I'll keep waiting.

Edit: I'm referring to built-in tools, not third-party stuff.

I think it's OK that the iPhone does not multi-task. The screen is too small to do more than one thing at a time though I suppose some of the slower-loading apps would be more user-friendly if they could be dismissed and returned to. OTOH, this is why the iPad is a disappointment. The screen is large enough to do more than one thing at once, but it doesn't. I was expecting some version of MacOS and if it had been there I'd be interested, especially for $500.

If we were really looking for a convergence-type device, IMO I do not see anything that the iPad does better that the Notion Ink Adam http://www.slashgear.com/notion-ink-...ds-on-0969281/that was announced December.

The PRS900 is my first eBook reader and I am very happy with it I do have a Powerbook and a nano, and I don't really see the iPad replacing any of my existing devices.

I'd wait for a few more months to get some tablet-eReader convergence alternatives to be available, but IMHO, the first gen iPad doesn't make the grade.

The Notion Ink Adam does look really interesting, and the concept of having different types of switchable display is certainly attractive. I'd like to hold one - the two photos showing backlight on and off are worrying. I had to sell my PRS-600 because *I* couldn't live with the reflection, and the "backlight off" photo looks like it has very similar issues given the very clear reflection of the photographer!

It is hard to capture what these devices feel like in the flesh on a photo, I'll be interested to get my hands on one. Although if I understand the release dates, I might well have an iPad by then. I guess there's going to be good eBay action this year as people jump on and off the different readers announced over the last few weeks!
