I agree with the others.
Alas, Babylon is one of my all time favorites. Another excellent novel is Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. |

Down to a Sunless Sea by David Graham was one of the first books I read in this genre. Excellent. I hadn't thought about it for years until I saw this thread.
My favorite TEOTWAWKI novel and one of the best books I've ever read is Stephen King's The Stand. |

Ohh - this used to be one of my favorite genres.
"Where Late The Sweet Birds Sang: A Novel" by Kate Wilhelm "Emergence" by David Palmer. He recently wrote a sequel (listed at $40 on Amazon) but I have not picked it up yet. "Earth abides" by George R Stewart Fred Saberhagen had a book that start out fantasy but the main characters flee from the current evil government and discover underground tech and it becomes post-apocalyptic. But I cannot remember the name. (Tank vs mounted knights, castles and sorcery - fun stuff). James Axler has the "Deathlands" series about a group of survivors who travel around a shattered earth through transportation gates and have adventures. I think there are 20+ different books in the series. "The Postman" by David Brin was actually a great book before the Kevin Costner movie ruined its reputation. Like Shakespear in Klingon -the original is better. (You can just search for "post-apocalyptic fiction" in Amazon) |

You might also enjoy the "Rings of the Master" series by Jack Chalker. Start with "Lords of the Middle Dark: (#1)". While not strictly end-of-the-world, it deals with a world where a super-computer has dumbed-down humans to live without technology so they cannot endanger themselves. Groups of humans become overseers for a year at a time and are smartened up temporally to manage disasters/health issues and some of them discover what has gone on - and that there is an over-ride...

"..The sequel to "Emergence," is called "Tracking," and was serialized in Analog Magazine in the July-August, September, and October 2008 issues"
Ohhh - thank you for that. I now have something to try and collect as Emergence was a favorite of mine years ago. |

In 20008, he posted a message as a review on Amazon, taking about the possible publishing of Tracking and that he had finished two other novels. He's nearly 70, so I guess his output will not be great, but someone needs to tell him about ebook publishing |

Umm, isn't there guidelines that limit posting commercial posts in the general discussion forum?

Interestingly, Fred Saberhagen's _Empire of the East_ was used as the back-story for his _Books of Swords_ and _Books of Lost Swords_ series --- he also did a book set in-between two: _Ardneh's Sword_.

Ohh forgot another I read recently: Solar Flare by Larry Burkett
The only caution I have here is if you find offense to religious references then it may be better for you to stay away. |

OMG - how could we forget:
"Dreamsnake" by Vonda Mcintyre (Shes a member here) I cannot remember if it was the Hugo or Nebula award but this novel won one of the top SciFi awards. (Ok - it won BOTH.) Highly recommended. |

One of the big books of the season, THE PASSAGE by Justin Cronin, is a very good EOW book where government-created vampires have destroyed most of humanity. Cronin started out in literary fiction and it shows, with lengthy but very well-written digressions and character building to go with the post-apocalyptic vamp-fighting action. Cronin got an enormous sum for both movie rights and two more books in the series before the first was even finished, so be aware that it is definitely the start of a series rather than a self-contained work. One of my favorite books I read this year.
Another well done EOW written by Steven King is his more recent Under the Dome, where a small Maine town is cut off from the rest of the world by a dome (methinks King must have seen The Simpsons Movie and thought - Great idea!). The more I get away from this story, the weaker it became for me - one-dimensional characters (including one transparent Dick Cheney clone, so those with political sensitivities might want to stay away), absurd length, and a somewhat compressed timeline - but I couldn't put it down while I was reading. |
