Make sense?
I guess still not really.

In an airport I use my cell phone to browse the internet and check/answer email. Its screen is smaller than the eDGe, but serves my purpose. And it has a real, albeit tiny, keyboard so I can type my mail in without the hassle of a virtual keyboard. I seriously hate them. They're one of the reasons I returned the iPhone after 3 days.

My cell phone combined with my PRS-600 are both smaller and cheaper than the eDGe. My reader I think is far superior to the eDGe in comfort since it's smaller and lighter. I'll give the edge () to the eDGe over my cell phone, since it has a larger screen, but I still don't see that it's really such a huge improvement. And my cell phone has the real keyboard and also runs Android.

But again, still JMO. For you it may be the most perfect device ever. I'm still living in the "What's the point?" corner of this debate.

Hope everyone is having a great holiday!

Can you have MobiPocket DRM AND ePub DRM? The website states "not at the same time".

I am hoping that the Entourage Edge will support the Android iReader application. Then it should have DRM support for:
- ePub & PDF built-in
- MobiPocket and eReader through iReader

The iReader application is just $2! I suspect a different version would be needed to take advantage to the dual screens and perhaps the larger "real estate".

Why I am getting the Edge

Reading over the comments as to why some would stick to a regular, dedicated ereader or phone to read books, I think many are missing several of the features that has attracted me to the edge.

1. Yes, it is larger than an ereader, but it allows me to do one of the most essential things I need to do as a teacher. I can get onto Blackboard, download student submitted papers and instead of going through the tedious task of editing with Word, I can write in my handwriting directly onto their paper and when I am done, submit it back to Blackboard, all on one device.

2. Why I want it over just using my phone or computer, it is actually eink, so I can read it outside without the glare or inside without the strain that does occur if you read a computer or phone screen too long, at least for me I have noticed this.

3. It has a journal function, so I can also take notes which I prefer to do, without having several notebooks in my bag all the time and then have to search through all the pages to find where I wrote the last note.

4. I can write, not just highlight on the books I read. Not counting fiction books for pleasure, many books I read are for reference in my class. I always like to underline and make comments in the margin. Now I can do that with several books on one device instead of carrying around 4 or 5 books. Most of the ereaders I have looked at do not allow you to annotate and underline, online highlight and they are not a touch screen.

5. I can link videos to the book if I would like and click on it to play on the LCD side. This would be nice for keeping track of videos I want to show in class for that specific point.

6. And in the end, all of these things are done with a more portable device than my laptop, although of course, it will not be replacing that, but provides a more portable version to take with me to work and travel while not having to bring so many things with me. I usually carry two to three bags. This will allow me to downsize considerably.

Great list of example use cases for the edge... which I am sure apply to people other than teachers... like students.

Great first post also! Welcome to MR!

I'm just sad you're stuck using Blackboard! (yep, I know what it is...I just don't like it at all)

My children use Blackboard for their college classes, but my college uses Angel. Just watching my daughter I find I like Angel much better. (Yes, there are three of us in college, though my children are doing dual credit in high school, not full time Uni.)

spazzer, those are very good uses. I hadn't thought of it from a teacher standpoint.

The other similarly-purposed programs I've used have done a better, more consistent job (user interface, features, following standards) ...and are open source. Boggles me why any $ conscious organizations would lease blackboard...ah well.

While I don't think the edge is in my future, I'm enjoying reading about it, and really appreciate Spazzer's thoughtful post above (and everyone else's).
