Janiegirl,

To many here one of the great disadvantages of the Kindle is that you can not use it to read free books from the library. Readers such as those made by Sony, or in your case the Nook, can read these books. In Las Vegas the public library has a digital book collection of about 5,000 titles. My wish list is over 100 books. Of course you are free to buy books instead of borrowing them online, it's just that many of us love the borrowing ability of the Nook and Sony Readers. No offense is intended.

I'm totally bumbed. My 900 is still sitting on a FedEx truck that didnt complete deliveries for the 24th. I too live in the Springfield VA area.

Good to hear that others in this area received theirs.

I think you possibly don't know about the Overdrive system? If so, it's the service that puts out ebooks for libraries, basically a hosting service for books, if you will. To gain access to that, via the Internet, you need a public library card. You may need to go into your library for that card, but after that it's all Internet based. Load and go!

Your choice I suppose, but it's downright silly not to take advantage of it.

That sucks. Hope you get yours soon enough.

I'm enjoying mine well enough. I still kinda wish they could find a way to control the reflections a bit more, but I'm getting used to it, and the other aspects of the device outweigh it in my mind.

The store has been somewhat unreliable the first day or so, although auto-delivery seems to be working fine.

Both the Kindle and Nook can download tons of public domain titles for free. As a matter of fact, the Kindle can download many of these directly over the air, unlike the Sony or Nook.

Lol. Actually, I think you've discovered a major bug. If you change the size of the font, the amount of text displayed on each page changes, so the number of pages has to change, unless the length of the pages is changed, which would be pretty odd.

Does the screen page actually scroll below the bottom of the display?

It isn't a bug, it is how ePub works. On the 300/700/505/600, it shows the start of each 'page' on the right side, although the 900 doesn't show where each page starts.

ePubs will have the same number of pages on any device, at any font size, so if you say some text is on page 45, it is always on 45 no matter where someone opens it.

and that's a feature of the format, not a bug.

It's either that or:

- Don't use the term 'page' and use some other term, like the Kindle.
- Make citations of electronic texts harder by having to specify device, font size, and other information, all of which doesn't actually make finding the original text any easier.

By "page", you really mean "page-equivalent", right? So you have more than one screen that says "Page 45".

On the Kindle, you can go precisely to the same location on any Kindle, regardless of font size. With ePub, you can navigate the the starting screen of the page, which may cover many screens.

Do I have it correct now?

It's much easier to find specific text on the Kindle, though. Location 12345 is the precise same spot on every Kindle, regardless of font size.

You're right though; with epub, you evidently can specify a "page" (that in-fact may be a range of screens, right?) that refers to an approximate location regardless of font size or reading device. This is certainly a handy feature.

I do wish Amazon had provided the option for both systems on the Kindle.

elmoglick, you've got a pretty good grasp on the concepts now.

And yeah, it's a bit of a tradeoff.

Page already has a meaning, so it makes sense to reuse it in the context of eBooks. But the catch is that a single page can be across multiple screens, or multiple pages on a single screen. This is still no worse, and in some ways better, than paper books though. When citing a book, you have to specify the edition, or the page number is meaningless, since each edition has different numbering for the most part.

Locations are a whole new thing, and so there is some 'training' involved. I remember a lot of early complaints that Amazon should have just used page numbers on the first Kindle. They seem to have gotten over this hurdle though, as I've not seen any complaints recently.
