The exact same backup that goes to my NAS box also goes to Carbonite. I see no sense -- for me, that is -- to do an image of my drives so that both programs and data are backed up. I do back up program preference files, however. I don't have hundreds of GBs to backup; more like 10s of GBs. And my Internet connection is fiber optic. Besides, it is only the initial backup to Carbonite that takes time. On a daily basis I don't change GBs of data. |

My main issue is that I have literally hundreds of GB of audio books and radio shows stored on my NAS box, which I also use as a media server to stream to my living room. It never changes (other than to get added to), but it does need safely backing up, so for that I use external hard disk, and keep one at home and the other at work. Cloud storage would, I suspect, be pretty unworkable for me, given that the "upstream" speed of my ADSL connection is only 370kbit/sec (downstream is about 4Mbit/sec on a good day). |

That's probably a fine one. Same size (320) as the Western Digital one I have. Rating is good there.

The new Western Digital "Passport" range of external drives all seem to be getting "hammered" in reviews because they use a "microUSB" connector which, apparently, in many cases is very loose, and results in the drive losing its connection if you so much as touch the cable. That's why I go for ones with a nice, solid, mini USB.

Yes, but that's a full-sized drive which needs a power supply. You pay extra for the portability of a 2.5" bus-powered drive. Of course if you need the higher capacity, you're absolutely that larger drives make more sense.

I appreciate your posting the code. I had renewed my Carbonite subscription for 2 computers in September for 2 years. I've just tacked on 3 more years on each computer. Now I've got Carbonite until 2014. |

But seeing as it's for the purposes of data backup, portability is not so an issue. And having a power supply should not be a problem (in the grand scheme of spending a lot less on a lot more).

If you know, though, that you're never going to have more than a few 10s of GB of data (which probably is the case for the typical PC user), then do you think that it really matters one way or the other? Personally I like small portable drives for backups, because they're easy to carry around, put in my desk drawer without using up too much room, and so on. Everyone needs to make their own mind up about these things - there's no one answer that's right for everybody.

I use portable drives that I've salvaged from my old laptops. If the hard drive is in good condition, I buy cheap USB enclosures on eBay for them. I have one for backing up my netbook and another with just ebook and music files on it.
I've done the same with larger drives from my old desktops but I'm retiring a couple of those because the capacity is so small and to save space. |
