So many of the authors I enjoy have already been listed.
Would like to add Fiona McIntosh to the list, in particular "The Quickening" series |

Daniel Abraham
I did a quick search and I don't *think* he's been mentioned on this thread yet, but I really enjoyed Daniel Abraham's "Long Price Quartet". The first one ("A Shadow in Summer") is a bit weak, but it was his first novel-length effort. The character development, plot, pacing, etc. improve greatly in the next book. He's written a fair amount of short fiction, too.

I've always been fond of:
Elizabeth Haydon (Symphony of Ages) Kristen Britain (Green Rider books) The Shadow Trilogy by Chris Clairemont that covered the "ever after" span of time in "Willow" Dawn Cook Sarah Douglass (Starman Series) L.E. Modesitt (SpellSong Cycle) and of course Anne McCaffrey. |

Since I was a kid in the early 60's I've been a fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs - the creator of Tarzan. His lesser know works deal with civilizations on Venus ( my favorite), Mars, Jupiter, the Jungle, Lost Continents, the inner world, the wild west and historical settings.
Some find is writing predictable and he certainly churned out the work. A lot of his work is in the public domain and available at Project Gutenberg. |

I loved the Mars series! The first SF that I remember reading as a kid was Pellucidar which definitely impressed me. I've recently re-read it after finding it at Project Gutenberg and loved it just as much.
He was/is a great and entertaining writer! |

I never kid about stuff like this.

I generally look in the MobileRead ebooks section first, then in places like Project Gutenberg, if I'm not creating my own ebook edition. (I convert HTML format books for Plucker on Palm OS devices.) While places like Munseys and Manybooks carry public domain ebooks in just about every format, the format conversions are done by scripts. The MobileRead versions are hand crafted by the authors to take best advantage of what the ebook readers that use those formats can do. ______ Dennis |

Another author that does scifi / fantasy well that I've always enjoyed is Ben Bova. I especially like his Orion series, except for the last book #5 ORION AMONG THE STARS.
. SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! . . . . . . . . In book number 5 the phrase "deus ex machina" takes on new meaning as Orion actually DOES become a "god" and solves the whole mess of the entire novel series. The plot plods along and you realize as the remainder of the last pages are growing quite thin. You wonder how this is going to end. A snazzy hook for another novel? A sudden plot twist that skillfully wraps up all the situations? NO. Orion becomes a god, literally forces all parities to sit at a table and won't let them leave until they hash out their differences. I actually moaned so loud when I started to realize what was going down that my wife panicked and asked if I was ill. I almost was. I had not been that disappointed with a book ending in years. BAD BEN! BAD BEN! BAD WRITER! . . . SPOILER ALERT OVER! SPOILER ALERT OVER! SPOILER ALERT OVER! SPOILER ALERT OVER! |

Interesting. I read the Handful of Men series and thought it was excellent so I went and bought the A Man of His Word series, which is a prequel to the Handful of Men series, and thought it was terrible -- so bad that I couldn't even get through the first book in the series.

I have really enjoyed Fiona McIntosh but when her new book (whose title I have forgotten) was released this past year, I passed on it because the ebook was twice the price of the paperback. When I queried the publisher, I was told that the price was a fair price for an ebook.

Britain's Green Rider series was excellent. I didn't like Modesitt's Spellsong Cycle or the Corean Chronicles, but love the Recluse series (a new one comes out in January or February) and am really enjoying the new Imager series (the second book came out last month).
