I still use the stereo system amp/receiver and speakers I bought in 1975, and the Atari 1040ST computer I bought in 1987 (for my music database). So I voted for "up to 50 years".
That's why I am leaning toward the jetBook Lite, which runs on AA batteries. However, the life expectancy of the jetBook LCD screen is a question mark for me. |

a lisuesue? -100 years.
A dedicated ebook reader? About 5 years. By that time the device has been so out-dated that even when it still works, you just want to have a new one... |

I voted for five years, but am hoping for much more. My worry is that there will be some terminal failure of the hardware - e.g. one of the page turning buttons. If/when that happens then I may be tempted to upgrade my liseuse. I guess because I view it as a super version of a book, I expect a similar lifetime!

I voted 5 years as MTBF - mean time before failure - barring any accidents of course (I cracked the screen on 2 Rocket eBooks in the first year!).
I tend to consider the active lifetime as a preferred gadget limited based on the attractiveness of new models. Starting with the PRS-500 I purchased the new model each year until the 700, which I returned. Since then, I'll be happy to get three years before succumbing to the charms of a new model, but my old one will likely live on either as a passed down model or sold here or ebay. All that said, I do still have a working RCA 1100, RCA 1200, Gemstar 1150, Gemstar 2150 and eBookwise 1150. |

I still have quite old piece of electronics hanging around and working fine. I'm still using daily my circa 1995 HP 38G scientific calculator. Stored somewhere in a box I have an original Gameboy still in working order.
I expect no less from my 505, which feels a very well engineered product. Sure, the battery will someday have to be replaced, but it's relatively simple and easy with the unibody design of the 505. I will probably replace it far sooner with a more advanced reader though. Ps : lol @ all the foreign-words haters trolling around. |

The long-term durability of eInk screens is current an unknown factor. We know that the 1st-gen screens (such as that of the PRS-500) did fade somewhat over time (long-time board members will remember innumerable threads on the subject!). The 2nd gen screens that most of us are now using seem relatively immune to the problem over the 2 years or so that they've been available, but who knows whether the screen will last 10 years, or 20? Only time will tell.

I'd like to think my liseuses a closed self-sustaining environments.
I'm hoarding all the PD books I can find, I'm scanning my to-be-read paperbacks, and I'm buying a lot of books when sold internationally. All in the hope to fill a couple of memory cards and make my readers independent from a computer. I don't think it will be entirely possible, even if I can read at home with a power supply when batteries fail... But that's how dedicated devices should work, IMHO. And the same applies to media players: I'm waiting for a small 1TB device to store once for all my whole CD/LP collection in it... I voted for 50 years, meaning infinite: it's very unlikely I'll be still alive then.... |

In excess of 5 years, I tend to keep good care of my electronics and have never broken a laptop screen personally. My Sony TR5MP laptop is still operational (although the OS is showing the fact its never been reinstalled, I fear it so!) and will be 5 come November. I have high hopes for my 505 (silver of course

I voted up to 5 years, although I think I was being a bit pessimistic...
