How does InkPot handle this I wonder.

I apologize. I mis-spoke in my haste. The page numbering you see on commercial ePub devices is dictated by the Adobe ePub specification. The official specification does not offer recommendations on page numbering. While Adobe does document their page numbering, I do not know of an ePub reader beyond ADE that follows the Adobe algorithm.

I'm starting to think discontinuing the 505 was premmature. Although how could Sony have know that the Kindle would be dropping price. A 505 at $249 would fit perfectly between the 300 and the 600. As a company though you'd want folks to move on, and buy your new stuff... cause it's new. The feature said of the 600 can be made to justify it's extra cost, only book reader snobs would care about the contrast. ^_^

Thanks sfstino. Don't suppose you know how much they are knocking the 300's out for? Hubby is interested in one of his own, he can have my 505 and I can have a shiny new gadget

We start the Harley trip in Las Vegas and end up in SFO before flying back to London, so thats why I was asking. I'm more than happy with my 505 at the moment.

I might pop in to Waterstones at the weekend and see if they have 300's out on display and have a play around.

Went and had a play with the 600 and 300 in Waterstones this past weekend. If my 505 went wrong, I would buy a 300, as I have never used the SD card anyway, I tend to connect to the PC to upload/download books each week, and even if I was on holiday, could still have enough books on the 505 without the card.

I didn't like the 600 screen - it reminded me of an old Palm Pilot, back in the black and white days. A bit fuzzy for my eyes.

Unfortunately only the 600 had books loaded on it! So I couldn't test the 300 fully. It seems quite a bit thinner - assume it is also lighter but it was glued to the stand so couldn't tell. The strip around the outside edges seems a bit plasticy but otherwise nicely made.

When my 505 gives up the ghost I'll go back to pbooks until another decent ereader is on the market. I don't like the new ones. Some good features, like the dictionary, but I have a good electronic small dictionary/thesaurus/quotation device anyway (Sharp PW-E500A). I don't like touch-screens. The 300 lacks an SD slot which I find essential. I emailed Sony via a newsletter they sent, giving my opinion that they should keep the 505 going with the 300, 600 and Daily Edition. They probably didn't bother reading it.

I'm curious why you feel an SD slot is "essential"? I have about 200 files on mine (about 150 novels & 50 short stories) which is about one year's worth of reading. And I still only use about 25% of internal memory. I can't imagine a real need for an SD card at all. (I never even used one on my 505, which has less internal memory.)

I rarely use my SD slot.

But a fair number of members like it for a variety of reasons:
1. Long trips. A couple of years ago we had a photographer who was planning an extended trip to the Amazon delta, and wanted to take his library with him. Some people in the military may also appreciate this possibility, especially if they want to travel light.
2. Some people want to have a completely free choice, so that when they finish a book they can start on anything else in their library immediately.
3. Others figure that if they can put their entire music library onto their IPods, then they should also be able to put their entire ebook library onto a card.

PRS 505 availabilty

10/17/09 (US) 17/10/09 (EU)

Purchased a 505 today at a local target (for my daughter) for 198.00 US + tax. That was the last one at that store but I had the sales person do a search of local stores and two other Targets in my area still had four each left in stock. I bought my own 505 about one week ago at a WalMart for 200.00 US + tax. I feel the 505 is a much better unit then either the 300 or 600. I did buy the Sony charger for mine. If you call a local Target store and go through the phone tree push the # for electronics. When your able to speak to a sales person you can ask him/her to check their stock for Item #057150005. If they are out ask the person to do a local check for you in their terminal for other Target stores in your area for that item #. If any stores show any in stock ask for the phone number of that store, call the store to verify they have the item before you drive there. If you go to you local Target store the sales person can give you a print out of the other Target stores in your are that still have stock left.

The reason I find the SD card essential is that my laptop only has a 40gb hard drive, which is nearly full, so I like to put all books onto the card then move the archived files onto an external hard drive. I have several collections of different genre on the reader, so I'm never short of something to read depending on my mood. Also, unlike my pbooks, the ereader, and all downloaded books, is always close to hand, I don't have to go hunting for 'something to read'.

I find an SD essential because next to regular books I like to read comics. Which occupy a lot of space. Secondly, I've started using princeXML to format my books as pretty PDFs, and these eat more space too.

one use case =/= all use cases.

I purchased the 505 because unlike the 300 it takes sd cards and has the 6" screen. I like the larger screen allowing for larger font in the small mode. Seems like the 6" is small enough. I have read 5 books since buying it 10 days ago. Haven't even loaded any music but if I did I would want access to a large selection and the 8g duo card would be great for that. Not to mention audio books wich I like to listen to on long trips.

And it will serve you well, I'm sure. Heck, if mine broke right now I would hunt down a replacement instead of buying one of the later models.
