I'm not sure it was worth the Guardian's time considering most ebooks make their ways into the hands of pirates?
The real problem is that publisher see this as a reason to create more restrictive draconian DRM when in fact it should make them want to be more like some aspects of iTunes. Specifically providing an easy way for people to buy ebooks at a reasonable price like iTunes does for music/tv/movies. When people can easily get media at a reasonable price and reasonable DRM, they just buy it. |

The other thing publishers should avoid, but probably won't, is this tendency to claim every illegal download is a lost sale, its a stupid argument as there's no real way to know how many would buy it for sure. |

Piracy is largely about new mega-sellers -- the Harry Potters and the Dan Browns. Books still in copyright but without huge illegal sales potential tend to be pirated small scale if at all and it's no real skin off anyone's nose (at least not until portable readers have a firmer toe-hold). I think many of my colleagues in the indudstry are a tad paranoid about ebook piracy. Let's face it, any self-respecting pirate can just as easily scan the treebook and put it out in rogue ebook or paperback form. N

The Italian version of the last Harry Potter made a good record.
The book was in the bookstores at 00:00, and I found at quarter past midnight a pdf with the first five chapters (scanned and proofreaded: there was no ebook source to de-DRM). The next part was up about an hour later. The funny thing is that there were lots of teenagers queueing (or better, having the strange clot-like formation Italians call "queue") in front of the bookstores since the morning to wait for the special nightly opening, waiting to grab a copy of the book. At 10:00 in the morning the book was in the local supermarkets at 20% off... But most of those early buyers din't read it at all, they just waited for the movie. ![]() |
