*River God* is a solid read, so you can forgive Smith if he plays a little fast and loose with historical fact. It is billed as fiction, after all. You know, it always tickles me pink when Hollywood whinges about the 'lies' told about actors in the tabloid press when they've so deliberately and blatantly distorted historical truth for coming up 100 years. Hands up all those cinema goers who now believe that William Wallace wore the kilt or that Richard the Lion Heart spoke English.

The fact that people feel that they have to constantly analyze or criticize his books have created more publicity and money for him than anything else could have done and he's laughing to the bank. I don't love him, I don't hate him, I'm just amazed at the amount of time and energy over the uproar
With his previous work he was like fast food or a good summer blockbuster, not something you would want all the time, but fine for a change from your usual.

This latest one sort of feels like he couldn't really be bothered with it, while his work was never great, the earlier stuff did have a good pace to it, but this one sort of trudges along checking off the required parts of a dan brown novel as it goes.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through it now, and enjoying it very much. An excellent read so far.

Hey, wasn't he Scottish? And don't all scottish (especially at that time) wear kilts? And why would an English court speak French anyway?

You mean, hands up all those cinema goers who believe everything that is shown in movies/series and written in books...

No, kilts are a much more modern construct.

I can second that!! It isn't rocket science, but it is a jolly good read.

Because, after William the Conqueror, English kings were French. In fact the House of Windsor is mostly German.

They were Welsh in origin, but Henry VII did spend over a decade in exile in France and it was with French help that he captured the crown - so both right then
