Yes, if you are picky about color, then you had better like silver or red.

Looks like you can still get the blue reader...available in the special Michael Connelly Limited Edition.

Maybe they're just clearing the deck for my dream machine...
The Sony VaioReader featuring a 9+ inch Pixel Qi touch screen, wifi and Verizon 3G! As long as I could get a car adapter ('cause that's where I'd be living) I'd so be there! |

Its a Sony ploy to make Amazon's Bezos think Sony is pulling out of the ereader biz. Comes Sept Sony will release two new models that will blow the Kindle out of the water. You heard it here first

Combine the idea of the PRS readers, a Viao Netbook and a Pixel Qi 3Qi display and I bet Sony sees a better market with a much larger upside...then they can partner with B&N and their dedicated reading devices and you have a very attractive package which can satisfy a wider range of end users. And do it all from a single production line vs. the cost of multiple factories and production lines.
I see something like this to make a lot of sense...had the 700's been a winner it might be a different story but eink displays might have simply not advanced as fast as Sony anticipated so a shift to an instantly available tech is a prudent move. |

My guess is that Sony is concentrating in the non USA market now to gain as much market share there as possible before Amazon finally makes it.
As I mentioned in Germany, Switzerland and France only the silver model PRS-505 is sold. I did not even know there are different colours available. The PRS-700 is not sold at all which upset some. Taking the not so well received PRS-700 off the market means we (Europeans) don't feel cheated of the top range model, feel like being offered only the old stuff. We also don't need to hold back our purchase and wait for said more modern device to appear here. Reducing the colour options means steam lined production so prices can be reduced. Martin |

Well if they stop producing the readers then I probably will by one of those Ukrainian-Taiwanese readers. The 5" PocketBook looks VERY nice with all its gyro stuff and cool covers and the software is good , hope hardware does not breaks next day

I hope it's just a momentary glitch and Sony keeps at it, but they may have been in contention for the Barnes and Noble contract.

Just fooling around in my head: VAIO + ebook reader = a netbook with an e-ink touch screen running Windows 7. The screen would be low res compared to most laptop screens, n-shades of grey, and have a miserably low refresh rate. It would be awful to watch videos on. But it could be a great ebook reader and a nearly fully functional PC with a display that would drain the battery much more slowly than current netbooks. If it was "convertible" (i.e., flipped into a tablet) and had a touch screen and was a full PC running Windows 7, I'd be the first person in line to........look at one.

It's interesting to read everyone's expressed opinion, so I'll offer mine (with the caveat that - as my drill sergeant expressed it - "opinions are like as*h***s: Everyone has one."):
I don't think Sony is exiting the ebook business; rather, I think they're preparing for a new line of Readers. I was in Tulsa yesterday, at Borders, and they had on display both the 505 and 700. I asked him if he had any 700s for sale and he checked. There were none. He then called Sony to see if they could sell me the 700 display model and they told him (from what he told me), that he was to take the entire display unit down. (If there was more information given, the manager did not share that with me.) He then called the other Borders in the Tulsa area and they, too, had no 700s for sale. Don P.S.: Remember, I'm giving you my opinions and sharing the information that was given to me. My opinion about all this is probably as valid as "yours." Pardon me, now, while I go to the bathroom.... ![]() |
