Anyone tried the world's most expensive coffee, Kopi Luwak?
"Kopi Luwak (pronounced [ˈkopi ˈluwaʔ]) or Civet coffee is coffee made from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) and other related civet populations." As a veggie, I'm a bit ambivalent about whether I'd give it a go - probably not on balance . |

We often visit a little village in Brittany which now has a snail farm.
http://www.espace-escargots.com/home.html I'm not squeamish but can't stomach the thought of putting snails into my mouth. But other people seem to like them. |

my kids couldn't deal with the concept of not being able to get them in virtually every restaraunt when we came back.

ah! a snail in the wild is actually terribly toxic! I actually looked up how to cook them, as there were plenty around us in GERMANY!!!. anyway essentially you have to starve them for a week to get the toxins out.
going back to Colorado provided very few snail oppourtunities. just to dry. now in washington, their shelless cousins are everywhere and I haven't a clue as to the edibility of those. |

That's another plan foiled! I'm just going to have to give up on the idea of growing hostas...
![]() I have no idea if slugs are edible either, and I'm not sure I want to know... |

Wow. My first thought was "peanut butter and Miracle Whip sandwiches," but you all put me to shame.
I have eaten squirrel, rabbit and deer, but that's not unusual where I come from. I've tried biltong but didn't care for it. I remember eating at an Indian restaurant once where they used saffron and rosewater as seasonings, and smelling really good for about a week afterward. |

I was with my National Guard unit training with the Japanese Ground Defense Forces in Obihiro, Japan. We were at a dinner hosted by the unit we were training with. At my table, Japanese Ground Defense members were on one side of each table; while we, their guests, were on the other, all of us in uniform. I picked up a slice of what appeared to be a very dark, almost black, pickled beet with my chop sticks. Got two, as one was attached at the edge, and placed it in my mouth. I don't know what it was, but it was the most horrible and spicy thing I have ever eaten in my life. I had stopped chewing for a moment and felt as if every pair of eyes on the other side of that table were staring at me. Suddenly the word "diplomacy" entered my mind for just a moment and somehow I found the wherewithal to chew and swallow the foul stuff. Relations with Japan were maintained and a war was avoided, despite my nausea.
