Thankfully we were going to Grandma's house and since my mother is a card carrying member of Super Shoppers of America, we were at the mall replenishing the missing items in no time!! Needless to say since that time, Shannon has been asked at least once before we leave for a trip by every member of the family if she has packed her unmentionables. She is non-too-pleased by this, let me tell you.
Tim and I have a rule of 1 bag each, carry-on only. This was a challenge when we spent 2 wks in Spain. We wore every outfit twice before it was "officially" dirty, even if it was filthy after the first wearing. Wear comfy sneakers on the plane and pack a pair of sandals. Depend on the kindness of hotels for toiletries and/or the ready availability of shops to purchase anything we needed. Actually wear those souvenir t-shirts twice, don't just pack them up and bring them home. Pack all of our oldest and rattiest underwear, wear it twice, then throw it away in the hotel trash. That last move leaves room in the carry-on for souvenirs.

WARNING: Do not attempt this in winter, when clothes are bulkier. It might burst through the carry-on and rip a hole in the side of the plane!

Wishing all MR US members a happy 4th July in advance.

It's not a holiday here; in fact we in the UK don't seem to have any kind of National Day, which I think is a little bit sad.

Which one? She has two. I doubt many people know when they are and they are certainly not National holidays.

Well, that probably is supposed to be our National Day (but only for England), but its is not a holiday and I doubt whether 10% of English people could tell you when that is. If you do celebrate it you also tend to get looked on as some kind of rabid xenophobe with racist tendencies!

Again, not a National holiday.

Although there may well be more support for a National Day celebrating a man who wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and all MP's therein in the current climate.

Is it wrong that your packing tips gross me out, just a little? Actually, that's pretty much my husband's way to travel. When we did travel to the mainland last year in March, we encountered snow. I was always cold. I just don't have that wardrobe anymore! I figure lots of capris, t-shirts, just one pair of jeans (I'm a real jeans kind of girl), and one sweater. We do have some family somewhere in the area, so I've already enlisted my husband to wash our clothes at least once. That oughta do it, we really will only be gone around 9 days.

And, kaz, my comments on the lack of undies... from personal experience with my husband packing for the kids. The kids are actually a little better at packing. I taught them (for weekend trips around the island) one outfit for each day (shirt, shorts, undies), one extra outfit, one pair of long pants and one long shirt/sweatshirt. Mostly they just forget the toothbrush

Yay! Finally!

The 4th of July is a big deal for our small town of Mount Morris. Their big annual festival is the "Let Freedom Ring Festival" with lots of activities in the town square, a parade and a great fireworks display for such a small town! If that isn't enough to keep us busy, just across the river in Dixon, where Shel lives is their annual Petunia Festival and all of it's activities! Why both town's festivals are at the same time every year, I'll never know! Of course around here, all of the towns have their own festival sometime throughout the summer and then the county fairs start up towards the latter half of summer! Seems like there's something going on somewhere around us every week!

Nationalism. Bah! I say we should just all celebrate Mobilita Republica Day and be done with the flag waving. Oh, wait! An MR flag! (doggie runs away to ponder the possibilities)
