I have to agree somewhat with Palquito.

I don't think that the DX is that much of an improvement over the K2, to me it is more of a device that is targeted to a different audience. However, I think that Amazon was a little underhanded by not releasing both readers at the same time so that potential buyers could size them up and decide which is best for them. I probably would have still bought the K2 since I am more of a recreational reader, and the size and price of the DX would have been an issue. But I was never given that opportunity to shop and compare.

There may be college students or other professionals that would have bought the DX, but bought the K2.

I am completely happy with the K2 and have no plans on getting the DX. I expect another generation of the Kindle next year and will probably jump then.

I suppose they could have announced a bigger one was coming. But at the same time, people who wanted a larger reader that could do PDFs better etc. were silly to buy a K1 or K2.

Why buy something that doesn't do what you want it to do? There's no point in early adopting technology if it doesn't meet your needs.

The DX isn't an improvement for me at all since I only use ereaders for reading regular books, and have no interest in newspapers, magazines, pdfs etc. on an ereader. So a K1/K2 was ideal for me. But if I'd wanted to do those other things, I'd have held off. And I'd still be holding off as $498 is too much for me when I can just read newspapers and magazines online for free and prefer printouts of pdfs since I mark them up heavily.

I got a used K1 for $200 around the K2 launch and have no plans to upgrade anytime soon. For just leisure reading of regular books it does everything I need.

I've been around computers a long time (I'm 38); I'm also a electronics nerd. I've been an early adopter for many things and I know the risks. But I want people here to admit that Amazon just announced a Kindle that's superior to the Kindle 2 in every measurable sense for a mere $120 more. 3 months after they announced the Kindle 2.

Bigger screen, more memory, auto-rotate, pdf support.

Face it, we early adopters got burned this time.
My feelings are mixed.

On one hand, the Kindle 2 was good enough to purchase at the time you bought it and it served your needs during that time. As you're fully aware, technology marches on. If you had waited until the Kindle DX got released, you would have been without a device during that whole time. So, you have gotten value from the time you purchased the Kindle 2 up until the Kindle DX gets released where you can sell your Kindle 2 at a good re-sale price and purchase the DX. It's the best of both worlds I would say for having gotten use of the Kindle 2 during this period.

On the other hand, admittedly, I would be annoyed that another Kindle offering is being available a mere few months after the Kindle 2 was released - especially with little foresight that it was coming so soon.

So, expecting some consumer revolt over this, I think Amazon should offer some sort of in-store Kindle credit ($50 let's say) that early adopters can use towards the purchase of the Kindle DX or ebooks in their store. This would be very similar to what Apple/Steve Jobs did when he offered an in-store credit when the price of the iphone was significantly dropped a few short weeks after its initial release. That would be my suggestion to the overall problem. It wouldn't cost much for Amazon to do this and keep everyone relatively satisfied especially for the early adopters.

Now, to bring some perspective here, at least you have a Kindle choice. Folks outside the U.S. don't even have a choice without a lot of "backdoor" effort. Selfishly, Amazon should focus on making the Kindle device available internationally instead of providing different product offerings in the same geographic location (U.S. only).

Obviously krisk is expressing himself with a little rough-around-the-edges (I think funny) sentiments, but that's the way electronics goes. The whole pride in being a first adopter comes with knowing that you have what's best right now, not what's best two months ago. It's two months later, and if it wasn't Amazon with the KDX, it'd be Sony with the next-gen libre, or what everybody's still waiting for... PlasticLogic's true 8.5"x11" super-mega un-DRM ereader. Who knows, that might come out next month.

This comes up fairly often. If we didn't purchase now we could just wait forever. There's always a newer model coming out. You match your budget with your needs
and make a decision.
