I just got my K2, and I decided to get the Amazon cover for now and then check what other cases were available in six months or so.

The case is the perfect size and doesn't have too much overlap. The amount of padding feels sturdy enough to put in a bag without adding too much bulk, it fits perfectly in my everyday purse. I love the hinges, mine seem plenty sturdy. I have a hard time seeing myself willing to go to velcro or corners.

I was worried about the smell issue, because I'm really sensitive to scents. Perfume and chemical smells give me terrible headaches that are painkiller-resistant and can last for the rest of the day. The case had a slight odor that I could really only catch if I lifted it up to my nose. I aired it out on my windowsill and now I can barely even smell that. Even fresh out of the box, the smell didn't set off a headache.

I am impressed with the quality for price on the default amazon kindle 2 cover. It makes the devise feel more like a book. There is a smell of leather to it, and with all leathers it will degrade with time. (Personally I like the smell of new leather).

There is a slight smell when you first get it (new car smell) but it goes away over use, at least for me. Here are some pictures of the Amazon cover plus my skin purchased off ebay.

The hindges are great. Much better than the K1 cover.

If you like the hinges but want a classy well made (in the US) cover, check out Oberon. They have a solution! http://www.oberondesign.com/store/kindleInfo3.php
I have a regular (Velcro) cover for my K1 and can attest to its quality and beauty.

Having fairly extensive experience with leather goods and leather production processes, the odds are extremely high that the leather is producing whatever smell you notice. Usually such a smell is a result of the chemicals use to tan and/or dye the leather. Likely whoever manufactures the cover for Amazon uses cheap tanning processes and chemicals that produce the smell. Over time they will fade away.

I purchased the amazon cover when I ordered my Kindle, I'm new to the Kindle world so had no idea what to go with.
Mine had a slight odor to it, but not unpleasant. I love the fact that the cover is so thin, it really does not get in the way at all. I wish there was a color choice, but I might just have to get a skin to liven it up a bit.
