A larger size would be great for musicians

if you could display 8.5 x 11 and allowed annotations AND allowed PDFs to be uploaded, many many poor and muscle sore musicians would be rejoicing -- particularly those that play anything larger than say... a piccolo!

There is actually a dedicated music reader device out there now that costs around 1000 bucks and it does little more than any of the eink devices.

I do think Amazon should wait, though, a little longer between releases because that is kind of a slap in the face to those who waited for the K2 and then have that be "obsolete" already... If they do do something like that, they need to offer a reasonable trade-in program... (yeah, I realize technology is constantly evolving but this smacks of planned obsolescence for the sake of pure greed.)

I don't see how this at all obsoletes the current Kindle. It's a different market. A large format reader is much better for students, many business users, etc., but is not as nice for reading novels. It's less portable. You can't just toss it in a handbag, and it's less of a "curl up in a comfy chair" size. It likely will be quite a bit more expensive than the Kindle and it's 6" cousins. Many people will find themselves wanting both.

I have to agree with Alisa.

I see the Kindle 1 and Kindle 2 with 6" screens as almost a different product from a reader with a large screen. I'd prefer to use the 6" screen for things like novels and the larger screened device for textbooks, technical manuals, PDFs, sheets of music (kudos purl4peace), etcetras. I'd want both.

Absolutely. I don't think many would want an A4 sized or larger reader for leisure reading of novels etc. Just too big and bulky to lug around.

But it would be good for textbooks, newspapers, magazines, academic journal articles etc. for people interested in an ereader for those larger types of print material.

I have to vehemently disagree:-)

Reading a novel on the 8" iLiad is like reading a book. And it's as portable as a thin book.

Reading the same novel on a 6" K2 is..., well I am kind of used to it, but I much prefer the bigger one.

Kind of like the difference between reading a hard-cover and a paperback, for me.

Sure. But paperbacks are preferred by some people, sometimes.

I'd much rather read a paperback. Convenient, comfortable size and easily portable. Those iRexes, Plastic Logics, et al are just too large for plain reading. Hardbacks don't have the portability or convenience factor of a paperback. For business, corporate, tech, etc. 6" would be inconveniently small, but for READING, 6" is pretty much ideal.

The downside would be that since they're image file pdfs, they wouldn't be searchable, and I suspect highlighting wouldn't work either (could be wrong about that tho), and I'm not even sure about annotation; you could probably annotate a "page" but you might not be able to pick *where* on the page.

Not to say that the Google books wouldn't still be valuable. If all you want to do is *read* the darn things theyd' work fine.

Just thinking aloud (a-type?) because some of the older journal articles are also image file pdfs, and they would have the same problems.

I'm waiting till June to see if Apple release a 9.5" tablet with ipod touch functionality (apps, games, internet etc). Lots of rumors to do with it, but there always are.

If that is released, I'm selling my kindle 2 and getting the apple tablet. Would be great for reading music too..

I prefer the paperback -- when you fall asleep, it isn't heavy enough to give you a black eye when it lands on your face.

I can't believe another thread arguing about how big a eBook Reader should be. We seem to have several going at once with the same argument. What kind of world would it be if one person dictated everything for everybody. Just because someone like something different is no reason to try and force them to change. Are we so insecure that we need validation that the decision we made is the only one that could be made? Personally I think we should quit arguing about the size the screen and enjoy the one we chose.

Maybe I am weird - I've always liked hard-covers

But, in reality, the overall size of my Kindle is not that much smaller, than the overall size of the iLiad.

And while I read fine on the K2, I do find the experience of reading on the iLiad considerably more enjoyable. I don't lug any ereader in my back pocket, only when I travel, but then I cary a laptop and a few other things, so the size-difference is not an issue at all.

But, as the wise ones say: different people, different strokes.

I would definitely like a reader the size of my Kindle but with more screen. That would be great for fiction reading. I just want my recreational reader to be a good size for putting in my handbag. I don't want to have to carry a huge bag around just so I can have a book. The Kindle in it's case is about the size of a slim trade paperback or small hardback. I definitely plan on getting a larger reader, too, for tech books and such, but the 9.7" screen plus case is now getting close to the dimensions of laptop.

I wonder if they are going to push $300 bucks for the new K3. That would be pretty ridiculous, me thinks.
