Well, I have no idea what you're using to do conversions. Calibre is great as it will do the vast majority of conversions without much trouble.
I'm alternating between Calibre and BookDesigner; BD takes forever, and I haven't figured out how to get chapters to work in Calibre. (This is fairly unimportant for books I convert for myself, but it keeps me from converting works for upload here.)

They can (so long as they aren't DRMed) and it's pretty clearly stated in the manual although I can understand how some people might be confused.
Info that's in the manual doesn't convince people to buy the product.
I did note that it's been covered in the "myths" thread, and I'm glad to hear that.

Sure, I get ya. But I think that you're probably one of the only people in the world who desires to read them not on your computer but via a long, laborious, cut-n-paste process to put them into a PDF file and then dump that PDF file onto an eReader.
I *prefer* to read them at a computer. I just don't always have one of those with me. The "long, laborious process" is 3-5 minutes for a set of four or five posts with comments.

Yeah, I think you're so set in your ways that you're not open to doing things in new and better ways.
I have limited time & energy for learning new methods. All the ereading devices are cutting-edge tech; their software and hardware is changing drastically every year. I'm not going to invest dozens of hours into learning new methods that might be obsolete in a year.

The methods I'm using now, I've been using for years; I'll continue to use them for other projects even if ereading changes.

My main reason for not buying a kindle is.... I finally have broken my debt addiction and am busily paying ALL my debt off... As soon as that happens in another 2 months... I'm saving up. And buying one! (Unless I win the free one on this site)The Kindle looks like its the sweetest reader in the world!

Congrats. getting Debt free is an excellent plan. If you can pay off ALL your debt so quickly you are in much better shape than many.

Jon,

The prices are the same everywhere from the publisher. The difference is that Amazon is willing to lose money on each bestseller it sells at $9.99 or less (unless the MSRP is $19.95 or less). For the publisher to set different MSRPs based on who the retailer is would violate antitrust laws in the US.

Tried em both...

and I returned my Sony and got a Kindle. Originally liked the looks of the Sony better, but the software kept malfunctioning on my computer. Since i'm certainly no computer expert, I eventually gave up and reluctantly went with the Kindle. LOVE IT! As head fool, I can personally vouch that it's foolproof. I had no difficulty pulling it out of the box and using it imediately, without having to spend any time reading the manual. You can use your amazon account on your computer and download books to your Kindle while it is enroute, so when it arrives, turn it on and begin reading. Even my 78 year old mother LOVES it. If you love books, it is a no brainer in my opinion.

I don't own a kindle - wouldn't mind winning one if I can. But I bought the RocketEbook when if first came out. Bought a lot of books which I can't read now. They were basically destroyed by the system. Therefore, I like using my pocketpc and Ereader. Always able to transfer books to another pocket pc or even read on a pc. What I don't like is that Amazon is using their current monopoly to keep current books off our ebook market simply because I haven't bought into theirs.

1. Amazon does not allow me to buy one.

2. Even if Amazon DID let me to buy it, there are *very* few features [that are relevant to me] that K2 has and PRS500 does not. No folder support. No indication where in the book you are while you are looking at the list of books.

3. Amazon does not allow me to buy one.

4. K2 is missing some features, like SD card I consider essential.

5. Amazon does not allow me to buy one.

6. I can not justify spending cca. $400 for a reader when I still have an e-ink reader that is working very well.

7. Did I mention that Amazon does not allow me to buy one? ;-)

When my current reader breaks I will buy whatever is available in my country with the minimum amount of hassle. That is, without the use of Credit card (I still do not have one and do not plan to get one because of one device I want to buy) and without organizing complicated logistical operation (asking somebody to bring the device from USA or other country).

These are the reasons why all readers on the market suck. I won't be changing readers until a manufacturer offers a unit with a letter size screen for under $200. I expect that to happen in about 10 years.

Actually, while looking at the list of books, there is a row of "location dots" under each title.

The ones in bold tell you about where you are in each book, 1/3 the way, etc.

I have been asking for this feature many times.
Who knows? Perhaps kindle engineers do lurk here ;-)

Yep. Also, the length of the dotted row gives a rough indication of the book length.

The dots are there on the Kindle 1, too. Always have been there.
