The difference in the devices is because the GL4 shows up as a USB device and the GL4+ is MTP.

Maybe it's just

A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes (base-10), while a gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30, base-2). Because of this, storage sold as GB is often shown as a smaller number in operating systems that display sizes in GiB.

Gigabyte or Gibibyte (1000 or 1024)?

That's the way I've seen it used in North America where GB/GiB use B for bytes and Gb where b is bits. The only Italian computer magazine (Linux Pro???) I once looked at used GB/GiB so that is likely the standard there as well.

Windows now treats a GB as 1000 instead of 1024. I'm pretty sure that explains the discrepancy.

If I can find a Nook Glowlight 4 Plus as a decent price used, I'll probably grab it.

Supposedly, the head of the Nook division said that there would be new e-ink nooks this year. But it's almost October and we haven't gotten them yet, so I'm not holding my breath.

Always, since before IBM PC:
RAM & ROM use binary address lines. So powers of two. A 1024 byte RAM was called 1k or 1 Kilo bits.
Kilo, Mega, Giga, Tera are 10 based. Everywhere execept solid state memory!
Disks (non-SSD) and tapes don't use binary addressing, so 1 Gbyte = 1000,000,000 bytes, never 1024x x 1024 x 1024. But 1G of RAM of ROM is 1024x x 1024 x 1024

On most OSes for a long time file sizes could be chosen to display as real decimal based sizes or the RAM based sizes.
Nothing to do with Windows 8 or 10.

Where do you see that. When I look at drive sizes for example, a drive showing a total size of 2,000,381,014,016 bytes or 1.81TB. The only way that makes sense is if the TB is using 1024 as the base. 2 x 1024⁴. Looking at the exposed storage on a Kobo Sage, the drive shows 30,494,441,472 bytes or 28.3GB. I also plugged in an external 8GB hard drive and it showed 7.42TB.

When I look at file sizes, I see the same thing. A file with a total size of 498,137,500 bytes shows a file size of 475MB.

If Windows 11 was using 1000s, those drive sizes would be 2.0TB, & 30.4GB while the file size would be 498MB.

System is running Windows 11 25H2 (OS Build 26200.9550).

I booted up several VMs (Windows XP, Windows 8.1 & Windows 11 26H2, OPENSuse Tumbleweed & Ubuntu) and all seemed to be using 1024s for drive and file sizes. We could argue that they should be using MiB, GiB, TiB, etc. but that is a argument for another time and place.

AFAIK, outside of using a third party app that can display those sizes using 1000s such as the Files app ( https://github.com/files-community/Files ), there is no way to force Windows to use 1000s instead of 1024s.

This led to the "invention" of the Gibibyte and Meibibyte. Gigabyte and Megabyte officially became decimal values (1000) and Gibibyte and Mebibyte became binary values (1024).

So, some standards body rewrote history.

Nice try at deflection. You made no mention in your OP or your follow up that you were talking about hard drive sizes as reported by the manufacturer.

Yet for most computer uses, drive and file sizes in KB, MB, GB, TB, etc. are still counting in 1024s. You mentioned that Windows is using 1000s as the base units and has since Windows 8. All I could find was that Windows still uses 1KB=1,024 bytes, 1MB=1,048.576 bytes, 1GB=1,073,741,824 bytes and 1TB=1,099,511,627,776 bytes. No use of KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB, etc. And looking through too many pages of Windows documentation searching for 1000/1024, there appears as I stated in my previous message, that outside of 3rd party utilities, there is no way for Windows to display files sizes other than bytes in 1000s.

The standard set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 1998 and officially published in January 1999 as Amendment 2 to the international standard IEC 60027-2 seems to have made little appearance in the real world. Kind of like many other standards more honoured in the breach than in the observance.
