Well, blah! There goes there goes the ability to get azw3/kf8 via my Kindle Touch. (Haven't gotten an email yet.) I imagine my Paperwhite 2's DeDRMable KFX will go soon. My Oasis 2 is already done. Guess I will have to finally try Satsuoni's method for Kindle for PC or just forget about buying anything that is Kindle exclusive.

The question is whether download and transfer will still work and the inference is that it will not. The email coyly doesn't mention that specifically when it lists the other methods of accessing books that will end.
Amazon ended d&t over a year ago. The only downloads available now from the website are for DRM-free books in epub or pdf (and only if the publisher has turned it on for older books).

Just tested removing DRM from K4PC and it works perfectly.

Having a jailbreak does not automatically prevent the DRM patch from being deployed by Amazon.

It might someday provide a means to block or remove it. However, I have not heard of anyone working on that so far.

The original Paperwhite model, often called the PW1 here on MobileRead, is officially part of the 5th generation of Kindle devices and should really have been called that in their email.

Check the firmware version running on the device in Settings/Device Info. It it is 5.6.1.1 or earlier then you have a PW1 and this will affect you.

I have several older Kindles, including a PW1, that are affected by this change but I have yet to receive any notifications. Apparently US customers will be the last to be informed.

That's interesting. Yes, my firmware version is 5.6.1.1. I chatted on Amazon Chat or whatever regarding this. In Manage Your Apps and Devices my device is listed as a Paper White 5th gen. The "Chat" said I wouldn't be affected. Looks like he was wrong then!

The first Paperwhite was part of the 5th generation of Kindles. So they are one and the same.

Yeah, the "generation" thing is confusing. The first Paperwhite was released in 2012 and was part of the 5th generation of kindles.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Kindle

The Paperwhite 5, released in 2021, was part of the 11th generation of kindles.

Someone on reddit pasted the message and it had a URL for more information. It was the uk website, but I changed it to .com (I'm in the US) and got this page:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...YxKJr4WTdsVs2P

https://www.amazon.com/help/kindle/devicedeprecation also works...

Thanks for that. The information found there matches the emails people have been receiving.

Not sure which device you have? Identify your Kindle e-reader.
As per the recent discussion, it states "Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation" but there is no such device listed if you follow the link to "Identify your Kindle e-reader".

Assuming that Amazon won't be so kind as to offer a bulk download of our Libraries (registered to a soon-to-be-obsolete serial number), does anyone know of a way to accomplish the same with a Python script, or other method?

Amazon Customer Services often don’t know what they are talking about regarding kindles.

The DXG was flat, so time/date was 1970. Would not sync.
Eventually the time & date corrected from the Cell (EDGE on GSM as 3G is gone). It connected, but nothing loaded because they are all delivered already to a newer Kindle.
Explicitly sending a book on the Amazon Library worked on next DXG sync.

In reality the DXG firmware was obsolete when launched, was too similar HW to the K2 / DX so never got the K3 azw3 upgrade. I didn't research well enough and bought it in 2013 in a Amazon sale for A4 PDFs. It's useless unless you need large print mobis, but the screen has no light, so a friend with macular degeneration that can use Linux & Windows could not use it.

The K3 / Keyboard is the oldest useful Kindle (oldest with WiFi and AZW3?). The Paperwhite 1 has a curious lack of Flash memory and is lower resolution than PW3.
Even if there was no DRM on KFX, I'd not use a Kindle with KFX as it's less like the original epub. The azw3 is closer. It's also less efficient so that you can start reading while downloading, a feature only needed for slow Cell networks or dialup.

You had to do the script before Download & Transfer via USB was removed. There is no bulk downloading of Kindle eBooks any longer.

Has a single major publisher asked for this change, or is it purely political on Amazon's part?
