I agree with Sirtel that Amazon may eventually block older Kindles from downloading books. If so it would likely be done by making books published after a certain date only available in KFX format.

Technically, yes? I think the DRM on KF8 is versioned, so they could make a new derivation method and "patch" the firmware to use that as fallback. Practically, unlikely since modifying KF8 is somewhat more involved than KFX, and it is mostly obsolete to them, but then again, what do I know? They consistently do something I did not expect.

Oddly enough, it seems like Epubor did something by themselves for a change, and started to support K4Mac with SIP disabled. When SIP is off, process memory can be accessed and hence, either the key or book itself extracted. So it is feasible, but I do not know how true it is, obviously.

That would be 2.8.3. So, yes, but you need KFXArchiver from here. Used as described here. If you prefer key extractor, bump your version down to 2.8.0, the algos should be the same.

For the curious, this is the reddit post I have seen about K4Mac. I would not recommend disabling SIP if you don't know what it is for, and in general, would recommend Windows VM with free tools, but I can see the need for it here.

And people complain buying from Kobo is too complicated for them. I literally went cold turkey on Big River when they stopped allowing downloads except through the latest version of K4Mac so purchase from Kobo now. Also, an Epubor subscription is too much for me. I might want to buy one or two books a year from Kindle only authors. So they've lost sales by not going wide.

No matter how you remove the DRM from Kindle eBooks, it will never be easier then removing the DRM from Kobo eBooks.

Removing the DRM on the Kobo purchase is, indeed, easy. But the web site is a mess and the reviews are useless.

In practice, I look for books on Amazon then go to Kobo to buy the book most of the time.
