I do have a question about the 505 crashing when loading a book. Is it because the battery was cruddy? Or is it because the covers were hi-res and it couldn't properly load them? It worked fine on a book that didn't have a cover (non published epub direct from author's website) but another book (liberated Kindle converted to epub) was where the crashing happened.
I'm guessing, but I don't know, that's it's probably the battery. When one of my old Sonys only "half started," I realized the battery was low and it worked when plugged in. My 700 and 500 both have weak batteries. I'm surprised that both are at least trying to start after a week without charging. (Just tested them again. The 700 came up with a "low battery" warning, but it opened the book. The 500 tried to start, but stalled at "loading." So I'm guessing your issue is the battery.)

EDIT: Plugged the 500 into power, restarted it and it finished loading.

I figure it is my dying battery too. I tried opening a book (+1000 page omnibus) with the 505 fresh off the charger and while slow it opened fine.

Meanwhile, the rest of my Sony Team is doing great. I also have yet to get over how old they are and yet how well they work

I also experience a crash of the 505 with some books, but I don't know the reason for it, but it's not the battery IMO. Try sigil or calibre to resafe as ebook, maybe without a cover.
Please keep us informed, when you change the battery. I don't know if the thermistor issue affects the 505, too. If it works for you, I like to know which brand you used.

I've been thinking. If you think the 505 is good, why not get a Kobo Clara BW which is better in every way?

I never has a single crash with my 505. Then again, I made sure my eBooks had no errors. So what's causing it is most likely some book with errors.

That's kind of like saying, "If you think a '59 Buick Electra is good, why not buy a new Honda Accord?" A Honda Accord is fine, but it's pretty much useless if what you're looking for is a '59 Buick Electra.

I've never had a crash when loading a book in my 505s either, except when the battery is too low to open the book. Charging it (or opening the book when it's plugged in) works fine in my case. (The same thing with the 500 and 700 when their batteries are too low.)

Not exactly. I've had a 505 and I have two Kobos. So given a choice between the 505 or a Clara BW, the Clara BW is what I would go for. In fact, I would never ever go for an old Sony with a duff battery, low-res screen, and a slow processor.

I'm fairly certain that Scoob already has more modern eReaders than the PRS-505. He bought the 505 because its design is unique. Not everyone has the same criteria for choosing an eReader as you do.

For example, I use my Nook Glowlight 3 more than my Kobos because the warm screen is superior — and I like the side buttons (both pairs of them). I know there is a trade-off in the way the Nook handles fonts and in the firmware changes that I won't allow on the "old firmware" Glowlight 3, but I still prefer the screen and buttons enough to override those issues. Everyone makes their own choice about what's most important to them.

Choice is good.

I have a Voyage and Glow4 those are modern and good enough for me. I bought Sony because of page turn buttons (a big big selling point to me) and their beautiful design (and colors other than black). I'm sure the Clara is a great ereader but it's not for me. A Pocketbook Verse or Verse Pro would be something I'd be more interested in than a Clara.

I am near certain my 505 crashed bc the battery was near death. I have given it a charge until the battery icon is full and it's handled opening everything I have placed on it. Same when using it while plugged in.

All those things that prevent you from enjoying your Sony are things that don't bother me at all about mine. It's old tech I'm not expecting it to work like a modern ereader. It works as it should and I enjoy using the device even with it's trade offs of being old tech.

You're still missing the point. This is what you would go for. I'm pretty sure Scoob knows the difference between a modern Kobo eReader and a Sony PRS-505. (I also think he owns modern eReaders.) All of this is moot if you want something that isn't a modern "cookie cutter" eReader. Scoob wanted a PRS-505, which (to me) is analogous to a car collector wanting a '59 Buick Electra, and not a new Honda Accord.

Choice is good.

I have a PocketBook Touch HD 3, which is pretty much a Verse Pro in a slightly different case. I like it. It's one of the eReaders I'm keeping.

I almost bought a Touch Lux but I didn't know if I'd like the button placement. At that time I'd only used symmetrical ereaders with buttons on both bezels. Now after using the Sony devices daily I do like the bottom button placement too.
