My suggestion was actually a joke, but yes... using a smart plug would require one to be knowledgeable enough to know whether or not it will work with your particular device(s). Luckily I AM that knowledgeable. |

A button needs to be pressed to turn your device on or off. A switch can be left on and you can use a smart plug to turn the device on or off.

You keep saying that, but it's not really really true. Not all devices have buttons that need to be pressed to turn them on. Simply providing them with power will suffice to turn many on. As I already mentioned, all of my Echo devices will turn on and connect simply by plugging the power adapter into an outlet. If I was silly enough to actually plug them into smart switches, they would function just fine without needing to press a button.

I've been hosting e-mail for my domain for over 20 years now. The servers are in my home. I'm not on any SPAM lists, and have no problem sending or receiving e-mail.

I've done the same for my home and at work. It is a bit of a pain to setup the SPF, DKIM and DMARC records along with DNSSEC and maintain them as needed. Since configuring those, I've only made one spam list for my home system and it took a minute on their website to have the entry removed. The work one was more problematic since we had issues with some people who should never have been trusted with anything more advanced than chalk and slate.

I did several checks for blacklisting, supposedly I had a clean slate, still everything went to SPAM. I tried a couple different providers. This was about 8 or 9 years ago. I'm guessing things haven't gotten any better, but maybe they have. I'm past worrying about it now.

I didn't have my own server. I was using a virtual server from a provider, so you may be right on this. I put too much time into this about 8 or 9 years ago. But I may look into setting up a small server. Not today, though.

I had port issues. Local ISPs started blocking mailserver to mailserver communications (secure or otherwise) with residential accounts. I was in control of my own firewall/NAT, but it didn't matter. They simply didn't want me running my own mailserver. I gave up trying long ago. I went with a virtual server for a while but paying rent for something I could do myself made me feel dirty. So I gave it all up.
