And a lot of people have had their Reader broken when it's been put in a pocket. That's why a Reader that's too large to fit in a pocket is a good thing.

I don't mind color Readers being sold. But I do mind when they are being sold as a replacement for BW Readers.

'And a lot of people have had their Reader broken when it's been put in a pocket. That's why a Reader that's too large to fit in a pocket is a good thing.'
The Boox Palma has given pocket readers a bad name for this, but Hisense particularly and Moann are well designed for pockets. My son's Hisense A5 has taken an absolute battering every day for over 5 years and it's still going strong. I've had a pocket reader every day for just as long and the only one that's ever broken for me is a Palma. Prior to that, I broke many 6" readers not designed for pockets. 'Color Readers are CRAP!' Yep, unless someone REALLY needs colour they're currently a very poor relation to B/W readers. |

There is no good reason to stop making B&W eink at present. Here's a PDF to try on larger ereaders. Fredrick-Sandys_reproductions.pdf Converted from full colour scan to a few levels of mono as the etchings are pure black and white. Best results at 300 dpi, so needs zoom on a smaller screen. People who buy colour e-readers do so precisely to display colour content, something that monochrome e-readers cannot do, no matter how good their screens are. These e-readers are designed for those people. And many of them have also realised that they can view black and white content as well, with varying degrees of quality depending on the circumstances of use. Not everyone buys the e-reader with the highest resolution, the best contrast and fantastic sharpness, which is why there is such a wide variety of models on the market. Many other factors come into play, and colour is the most important one for those who ultimately decide to buy a colour e-reader.
I have always said that colour e-readers are not for everyone, but also that many people would have no problem using them if they knew about them. I have not changed my mind on this. Personally, I use both monochrome and colour e-readers interchangeably. I do not consider them incompatible. |

But some are being replaced. So if everyone would stop buying color Readers, then the BW ones may come back.

I see a lot of people here who will never buy a colour e-reader because they are not interested in colour or because they consider them to be of poor quality. Whether there are many or few of you, I do not know. Judging by the comments I read here, it seems that there are many of you, so there should be no particular cause for concern in the sense that you express. Or maybe there are only a few of you and you repeat yourselves constantly, making it seem like there are more of you. I do not know. In any case, if people decide to buy a colour e-reader for whatever reason (including because they have no other choice), it's something you won't be able to control. I very much doubt that people will stop buying colour e-readers as a way of putting pressure on manufacturers and suppliers.

A case in point is that even with the yellow banding problem with the original Kindle Colorsoft SE, apparently sales were good enough for Amazon to move forward with several other color models. Amazon sells a lot of Kindles, so they have the sales volume to be able to sell color and BW. Some smaller companies may not be able to justify 2 different versions of the same model. I don't know. I personally like color, but I also like page turn buttons on both sides. I know that I am in a minority, but if Barnes & Noble ever offers a color Nook, I'm all over it. |

However, having seen Kaleido 3 eink Boox and Pocketbook I'm happy that my Nxtpaper 11 & 14 suit me better for colour content. I'll never need colour for novels. The pocket sized Nxtpaper 50 is also good enough for occasional reading on the go instead of the PRS-350 or the smaller P47L. Last edited by Quoth; Yesterday at 03:31 PM. |
