I would also reccomend the following:
1) Craig Shaw Gardner (Ebenezum trilogy and Wuntvor Series), they are hilariuos;
2) Esther Friesner, I read a few of them, (Majick series) but I doubt they are available as ebooks;
3) Lawrence Watt Evans & Esther Friesner - Split Heirs
4) Tom Holt, english writer. Expecting someone taller is fantastic.
5) C. Dale Brittain, probably little known, his series of The Wizard of Yurt is very funny
6) A Classic, Robert Schekley - Mindswap
7) Ron Goulart, although maybe not as a first choice, but has a lot of material

All the others mentioned previuosly are on top of my potential list as well.

Bruno

Almost forgot
8) Roger Zelazny & RObert Schekley - "Bring me the head of Prince Charming", charming (sorry for the pun)

Has anyone read the old Thorne Smith books? More fantasy than Sci-fi but let's not get into that argument.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorne_Smith

James Thorne Smith Jr. (March 27, 1892–June 21, 1934), was an American writer of humorous supernaturnal fantasy fiction.

Best known today for his creation of Topper, Smith's comic fantasy fiction (most of it involving sex, lots of drinking, and supernatural transformations, and aided by racy illustrations) sold millions of copies in the early 1930s. Smith drank as steadily as his characters; his appearance in James Thurber's The Years With Ross involves an unexplained week-long disappearance.

<snip>

I can remember laughing semi-continuously at long stretches of "The Night Life of the Gods". And then I liked his "Bishop's Jaegers" which didn't have any Supernatural elements.

From that same page:

The Bishop's Jaegers (1932). Depressed and indifferent heir of a vast coffee import fortune, Peter Van Dyke finds his life and high society engagement turn upside down when his secretary, Josephine Duval determines that she will rescue him from his horrible fate by ruining him morally.

<snip>

Robert
I've read Topper and enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check out some more Thorne Smith. I'd forgotten about him.

Oh? I looked through the index file for the Books here and the "Night Life of the Gods" was the only one listed. If the "Bishops Jaegers" is around I'd like to find that one. And some of the others.

And many of them are available as freely downloadable ebooks through Project Gutenberg Australia: http://gutenberg.net.au/

(In Australia we have a shorter copyright term than the US.)

Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat series IS terrific, Also his Bill, The Galactic Hero series is classic sci-fi nuttiness. Enjoy.

Hmm, can't believe I forgot to suggest Tim Powers' "The Drawing of the Dark." Quite humorous Arthurian fantasy!

I don't know if this quite falls in line with your request, but I found most books by David Eddings to have a humour which appeale to me. Especially the Ellenium and Tamuli series.

Cant't believe tha this is 4 pages in and no one has mentioned Robert Rankin - lots of good funny books, not quite sure if it fits into Sci Fi as most of it starts in the local pub in Brentford!

Tom Holt is also OK, but Rankin is funnier than Pratchett some of the time (but I second the recommendation for Good Omens).

Christopher Moore is a very funny authoe who uses fantasy and sci-fi devices in his stories. Demons, angels, zombies, vampires, sea monsters, talking fruit bats, etc.
I've read:
Practical Demonkeeping
The Island of the Sequined Love Nun*
Fluke
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal
Coyote Blue
Bloodsucking Fiends
The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove*
The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror*
"Our Lady of the Fishnet Stockings" (short story)

*my favorites
