Do most people mod/root their Kobos?

Thanks for the details folks. I've gotten my Calibre and plugins back in shape so I can read the books I buy where I want to read them - which will require side loading. My freebies are PDF's and public domain books from Gutenberg or mobileread (thanks for the conversions!). The Kindle email hooks work great for those but maybe I should just go back to sideloading everything - it works and I've always got back ups in a Calibre library.

I have a follow up PDF question. My Kindle Oasis has a smart crop - it zooms in a little. My B&N G+ has a dumb crop - none at all. So the text is the same size on my 7" Kindle as my 8" Nook. How does PDF crop work on Kobo both with and without KOReader? Obviously I'm trying to avoid modding a Kobo, but if the benefits are greater than the costs, maybe I'll give in.

I can't speak for koreader, I didn't like it the one time I tried it ages ago specifically because of poor zoom control. (Maybe they fixed it, idunno.)

Kobo doesn't have a smart crop unfortunately. However, if you have a two column document, you can double tap and it's pretty close to perfect, and swiping gives you four quadrants of the page.

One one and three column documents are a bit more awkward and manual zooming may be required. However, I've found pinch zoom adequate for those.

Which only removes the current homescreen but doesn’t return the old one.

True, but the only thing I used the old one for was a MRU list of books. I dismissed all other tiles. The My Books: Reading and Sort by Recent does exactly that now, so I'm happy
