And I'm not sure how to determine the "save template"... ? But all of my books are uploaded via the Kobo extension that generates kepub files from epubs (can't remember its name for the moment - I have Calibre closed so that I can look at the drive without having to wait for Calibre to scan the books on the device). As far as I can see, each book is contained in a folder according to author - so some of the author folders, where I have more than one book by them, obviously have more than one file in them. Does that answer your question at all?

Kobo Utilities - of course! Or, rather, Kobo Touch Extended (part of KU?), which I've assumed handles that kind of thing automatically(?). But I've got automatic metadata management in my preferences.

If you have the Kobo Utilities plugin installed, you can try vacuuming the database (Kobo Utilities => Database => Compress the device database) and see how much the database shrinks.

I ran into a similar issue when I upgraded my Clara HD's internal storage to 128GB and then stored ~15,000 books on it. The database is normally accessed out of RAM but since the database size far exceeded the size of the RAM (512GB) RAM which both the Clara HD and Libra 2 have, things got rather slow. I removed most of the books and my Clara HD returned to it's normal speed. I did upgrade one friend's Libra to to 128GB but since he reads mostly manga which takes a lot of disk space but relatively little RAM, he's a happy camper. When we set it up, their ~300 manga ebooks took up about 26GB but the database was around 100MB.

No, Kobo Utilities is a separate plugin. If you have upgraded calibre to version 8+, the KoboTouchExtended driver will have been disabled since the KoboTouch driver now handles the on the fly conversion to kepub.

If you haven't upgraded to calibre 8+ as yet, I would recommend opening the KoboTouchExtended configuration and recording/screenshotting the setup since it will not be migrated when you upgrade to calibre 8+.

Thanks for this. I've compressed the db - from around 2,911 MB to just under 2,800.

And I'm already updated to Calibre 8.4, so I guess KTE is no longer a thing.

One odd thing, which may or may not be enlightening:

Before I compressed the database, I tried to improve things by removing all of the pdf files on the device (which it isn't much good for reading them anyway) - it was a little under 200 pdf books. After I'd done that, the time taken to perform the "Get list of books on device" process JUMPED from about 8 mins to nearly 13 minutes. So: fewer books on the device; more time to "Get list".

Now, having compressed the database, that time has gone down again - but only to 9 mins. - so, not as fast as it was BEFORE I removed the pdf files.

Any ideas as to what might explain this?

UPDATE (Is it not possible to just delete messages on here?): On the next attempt it's gone down to just under 5 mins. Hurrah!

And thanks again!
