Old Samsung devices do slow down (at least those I've owned), but the more vanilla Android devices and Windows 10 have done right by me. |

I'd like to get a Zune, but the 80/120GB ones I'd be interested in are a bit too pricey for me.

I kick myself for things I've tossed. I had an HP 95LX. At that time I thought it was so cool having a handheld device that ran DOS. I would download DOS programs from CompuServe to run on it. At that time I was a total Unix geek and looked down my nose at Macs and PCs but the 95LX changed my mind. I had a subscription to this "magazine" called PC Shopper I think? I put it in quotes because it was the size of a NYC phone book and was about 98% advertisements.
I was really surprised at the churn in the PC market. Microsoft would announce something new and then it would be available in a month or two. In Unix land (well before Linux) Sun, IBM, DEC, etc. would announce something and you'd be lucky if it came out 2 years later. Last edited by hobnail; 05-13-2022 at 12:01 AM. |

The one thing that I regret losing and miss the most is my HP 29c. The display was red LEDs. How cool is that?
Although I still have my HP 15c which is still going strong. I wish I'd bought a 16c as well. Last edited by hobnail; 05-12-2022 at 11:59 PM. |

Not true for any particular install of Windows or Android unless you are installing junk. OTOH Apple deliberately slowed older iOS with an update to encourage people to upgrade. They claimed it was to help the battery. I've replaced the cell in a Sony older than than iPhone 4 and I use it as outdoor phone and media player. Don't use browser or Internet apps on it. My latest phone in contrast now never leaves the house as it has the number for 2FA, so I can't afford to have it lost or stolen.

I read up on it and looked at FutureNet schematic capture (hierarchical/hyper links in documents and Apple's Hypercard in late 1980s when designing a pocket electronic notepad with a stylus that worked as phone handset in 1989. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Xanadu Longest vapourware ever to produce something, about 55 years! Still doesn't work. WWW HTTP spec (approx 1989, websites 1992) was over a decade after the Internet started and wasn't original at all. Designed for LAN sharing of documents with no thought of privacy, security or way of tracking what linked to a page. |

I use a Sony Walkman NW-A45 that I got a long time ago. Its big brother is the A-105. It's rather expensive and only holds 16GB onboard but also has SD Card slot (which I have filled with a 128gb card). Handles hi-res audio and works as a DAC, etc. Definitely not for everyone, but I use it everyday for my music collection, which is ripped from all of my CDs.

I have a Samsung phone and a Sony $50 bluetooth headphone and I like the sound very well and have no complaints. I'm an aspiring musician but no tech aficionado. I prefer the ease of use of digital files (lossy) compared to cassette players that I had in the early 90s.

My husand recently unearthed his original iPod, the one that doubled as a 10G Firewire external hard drive. It's close on 20 years old, and still works well and holds a charge for nearly an hour.

How do you plug in a firewire device if the computer doesn't have firewire?

I certainly could only find old PCMCIA card adaptors for laptops and laptops haven't had those for close to 15 years. My 2002 laptop has firewire and still goes. Bought April 2002 and XP only re-installed once (June 200). I used it up to Nov 2016! If you have a PC with a PCI bus slot you can still get firewire cards. I don't see them for PCIe. My 8mm Digital camera has firewire so I have a Linux box with a PCI Firewire card and an extra 2G Byte SATA drive for capture and edit. I have a briefcase full of 8mm home movies to transfer. Fortunately the Sony Digital 8 also plays Analogue tapes via the Firewire at better quality than any analogue 8mm camcorder with a composite or Y/C analogue Video to PCI capture card. USB based Analogue video capture is rubbish and often only NTSC rather than PAL. |
