When buying this, I thought the pw5 would be much more expensive (I think I saw the signature edition's price). I had only seen basic and pw4 listed when looking for Kindles. If I'd known, I would've waited a month more to get a pw5 instead. But by the time I'm read for an upgrade, I'm sure Amazon would've released a newer version.
They aren’t releasing new models as often as late.

The basic (10th gen) Kindle seems like it should be the next to get a refresh (to improve screen resolution and give it a performance bump), but it’s not clear one is forthcoming. Since it first shipped, they did bump the storage from 4GB to 8GB without changing anything else. It’s a nice device, but if you are only saving $20-30 over the PW5 it is not the best value.

The cheapest base model pw5 (8gb) is 165 USD here, and I got the basic for 89 USD. I don't know how much the pw5 is from Amazon directly since they don't ship Kindles here. I would've saved 75 more if I found pw5 listings while looking to buy a Kindle.

I'm happy with the basic but sometimes it's just SLOW. And oftentimes my touch doesn't register, so I have to touch the screen again to turn the page. It happens every 10-20 page turns. Also I don't know if the battery on the basic is just atrocious or I'm just a really heavy reader. I find myself needing to top off the charge every few days.

The basic is great, but I think I'll stay away from that line when it's time to upgrade, even if Amazon releases an updated version. They also like to skimp on features like the inverted text (not that I'd use it, black background makes my vision blurry), but still, it would be nice to have that option.

After I got an iPad mini, my PW4 fell into disuse mostly because it was so slow (this was before the latest round of updates that did nothing to improve that situation). I thought I’d never get another Kindle.

But PW5 has reversed the situation. It’s an improvement on multiple fronts over the PW4: much faster, significantly better display and great battery performance (I have not warmed up to the warm light but that’s there as well). I didn’t think I needed a larger screen but I’ll never go back to a 6” screen. I do about half of my reading on it now.

As for inverted text, it’s what I use if reading in completely dark (lowering brightness or using warm light seem inferior to it) but only for maybe 5-10 minutes. The contrast is just not good enough to be comfortable. I’ll read on my OLED screen phone or iPad min with dark theme which is many times better.

I hope the pw5 becomes cheaper when it's time for me to upgrade. It really looks like an amazing device. But I doubt they'd make it cheaper. Maybe if they stop selling the pw4 and bring down the price to that level. Has Amazon ever did that? Reduce the price of an ereader permanently?

I think they did a permanent price drop in the early days to match the first Nook when it came out, but cannot remember any other case like that.

In the US, PW4 is still for sale (the page is hard to find) for $109.99/$129.99 for 8/32GB. All 4 colors are available. The basic Kindle is currently marked down to $54.99, and you can save another $20 overall if you purchase 2 of them. Maybe they’re reducing inventory in advance of launching a new model? Nah, they run these several times a year…

Like tomsem, I was just about to mention that the price is often reduced just before they bring out a new one which leaves you in a dilemma: to buy the reduced one or wait for the new version.

Didn't they also add front lighting?

The basic 10th gen already has front lighting in its first production, but only has 4gb. They bumped up the storage to 8gb after some time.

To answer the question, you best protect the screen WITH a cover.
