GrannyGrump's The Wind in the Willow is also very good and illustrated.

I'm ashamed to say I've never read that book in all of my 50+ years on this planet.

Why ashamed? I tried reading it, but found it too overtly religious for my tastes, as bad as the last few books in the Narnia series, which abandoned any pretence of allegory. To me, the idea that one should be "ashamed" of not having read a book is akin to the odious notion that there are "must read" books. Ugh.

I guess it's because I was the under the impression it was a classic that everyone is supposed to have read. I definitely don't need a book that's going to preach to me, though.

Regarding this specific book, that's just my personal allergy to heavy-handed religiosity. In a broader sense, though, I loathe the concept of "must read" books, outside of educational/employment requirements.

'Must read' is very subjective, anyway. There are books that 99% of people love that the other 1% hate. We all have our own idea of what books others should read before they leave this mortal coil. It all comes down to personal preference. There are many, many, many so-called 'classics' that I have never read and will probably never get around to reading.
