I admire your punctuality. With you as inspiration, perhaps I can attain such heights of regularity too. I shall put your scheme into practice!

You know, DG dear, -- I think Ravenne is right. Anyone with an ebook-reader of ANY flavor is part of the new generation, and is definitely young of mind, at the very least. I suspect I'm aged half-way between you two --- and wondering now if I need to forgo sleep (oh, but I LIKE it so!) for ebook reading. Would it count if I just put the kindle beneath my pillow?? Oh, but drat those fragile screens -- I probably can't use that shortcut!

Dammit!!! That excuse works 99% of the time in real life. We get all sorts of 'outs' because of our age.

Forget things? "never mind, dear, we all forget things as we age."

Cranky? "never mind, she's just old and they do get cranky"

Put foot in mouth? "never mind, she didn't really mean to say that, its just her age"

But here? Nooooooo.........! Thanks a lot!

I LOVE M*A*S*H. There was this one episode where there were tons of wounded coming in, and they had to do surgery round the clock. So the only sleep they got was in the form of short, forced naps when they would have sad, strange dreams. When the emergency was over and they could finally get some decent rest, they refused to sleep for fear of having strange dreams again.

To sleep, perchance to dream--

You know, I just want to make something perfectly clear here. I do not sleep that much on a normal schedule.

Honest.

Thank you for so accurately defining sleep. Yes, that is indeed a beautiful way to describe sleep.

I'm pretty much up at 8 to 8.30am every day, regardless of the time I go to sleep (which varies from 10pm through 2am). I generally "need" 8 hours, though I wouldn't rate sleep as something I'm desirous of. If I could eliminate sleep altogether, except for when I felt like it, I'd be very happy...well, maybe not "happy", but somewhat satisfied.

Sleep merely brings uncontrolled mind-altering visions of fear, or terror, or exposure, or lust, or administrative frustration, or ineffective violence, or dull irrelevant inconsequential moment, or subtle variations and intrusions of a possible physical, social or emotional reality that merely leads to utter confusion when the real reality breaks in with the sunlight. I'm sorry, but if I want my mind altered, I'd prefer to have control over it, thank you very much. The last thing I need is to let my id off its leash to rape and pillage my ego and superego, especially since I fear that the ego wants to join in and hold the superego down, and that the superego is not-so-cleverly-disguising-behind-fear its enjoyment of it all. I'd rather have them all conscious, sitting in a small, black room around a rickety, oak card-table, madly scribbling notes as bitter as the coffee onto its surface, and occasionally trying to play a variation of Russian Roulette with a bow-and-arrow (fire the arrow straight up, and try catch it with your forehead). Let them laugh and spit and drink and fight and cuss and dance in a blood-on-the-walls raging orgy, until the ignored sun starts bashing on the door shouting and threatening to call the dream police. That's the good stuff.

At least then I can watch what they're doing from the back row of the darkened, empty theatre that they're oblivious of from the stage, and write it all down to bear witness later on in court. Sleep? I don't like sleep. There's no-one around to draw the curtains.

Mmm, now the superego is looking both scared and excited, the ego just excited, and the id is taking off his freshly-drool-stained singlet...I wonder if their table needs a fourth player...
