Yes, it is the developers choice. As it always is. But, the choice was based on experience with Windows 7 and the Qt libraries being used. The issue is that Qt is requiring certain thing from the graphics drivers. As they are not being updated in Windows 7, and there is no way to predict which combination will fail, the developer decided he had to stop support. He didn't do that lightly, but, his experience with this sort of thing meant he had little choice. If he continued the support he would then be spending a significant amount of his time investigating why individual reports on Windows 7 didn't work and trying to fix them. Or reporting them to Qt and waiting for the fix from there. And his experience there is that the fix would never appear.

The issue now is that we don't actually know that calibre is working properly for all functions. Unless you have used all parts of calibre extensively, you don't know for sure. And as you are only running it on one hardware combination, that says nothing about any other combination. And @koboy's report is virtually meaningless. He has already stated he does not use calibre, so how the hell does he actually know if it is working correctly. And his measurement of "working" would have been the simplistic open calibre, open one book in the viewer, open one book in the editor and then close everything. I don't remember how the problems appeared, so, I can't say how useful any of that is.

And I would actually think that the problems would be more likely to occur on Win7 32bits. The issue is drivers. Were the 32bit versions maintained to the same level as the 64bit drivers? I would bet that updating some 32bit drivers were stopped a long time before the 64bit drivers.

Of course, none of these reports mean anything as the only two people have actually stated they have issues are not running Window7 64bit. One is using a MAC, the other Windows7 32bit. Nothing said here helps the former, and we don't actually know what happens with the latter.

Hi, David. As you know, I'm the Windows 7 32-bit guy. I tried installing the 32-bit version of calibe 4.23 from here:

It failed (as I expected it would), so I tried the Orca trick of editing the MSI file described here:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=334841

The program installed, but it would not run properly and crashed.

wrong. i never said i don't use calibre. what i actually said was i don't connect my e-reader which is true (now) but, that hasn't always been the case. not one week as gone by in the last 7 years that i haven't used calibre running Windows 7. my general use these days is to either to check an epub or do a epub to epub conversion.

there's no need to apologize. i (only) tried calibre Portable Version 5.3.1.1 from here https://calibre-ebook.com/download_portable on Windows 7 64-bit and it seems to be working fine for me. i don't have Windows 7 32-bit so i can't try that.

i know RobertJSawyer at post (49) as tried the 32-bit calibre Version 4.23 on his Windows 7 32-bit unfortunately without success, therefore i realise that logic probably dictates there's no point him trying the calibre Portable Version 5.31.1 at the link above.

that being said if i only had Windows 7 32-bit i'd still give it a try. after all it's very unlikely to do any harm. it will either work or it won't.

For what little it may be worth, I have one acquaintance who is running calibre 5.29 portable modded to x64 on Windows 7 x64. This was basically an attempt to allow her to continue to use her Windows 7 desktop and her new ereader until she replaces the computer. As a retired person, it is taking a while to allow her to afford that replacement.

And note she is using 5.29 since an attempt to upgrade to 5.30 resulting in calibre not running. We reverted back to 5.29 and she's going to live with it.

I'm now the proud owner of a Kobo Libra 2 -- lovely machine!

Although the regular calibre 5 won't install on my Windows 7 32-bit computer, calibre 5 PORTABLE is working just fine on it. Woohoo! Thanks for the suggestion, @DNSB!
