I'm not sure which answer you were looking for, but the Oasis looks notably better than the old Kindle. The text is sharper and the background is whiter.

It is as you say, but, the display of the eBook on the K3 is better because the Oasis is let justified and the K3 is full justified so the K3 wins unless the Oasis is justified.

I agree, but I think it might be a depth of focus issue. The threads in the cover on the left look sharp, but the key labels and the display look fuzzy. The key labels are likely worn, but I think they are also out of focus.

Yes...I tried my best to get both images with even focus, but all I had was a crappy cell phone camera.

In person, the screen on the Oasis is whiter, (even with the light all the way off), but the text is darker on the K3. When I blew the picture up, I can definitely see more pixels on the K3, but in real life, it doesn't look pixelated at all, at least to me.

I don't know. The text seems equally dark on both readers. But then the fuzzier text and grayer background... I could see someone saying it looks washed out.

I'm the one that said I could still read on my Nook ST, so I'm not picking on the older Kindle. Just saying that it clearly looks less nice than the newer.

I definitely agree that it's not as nice as the newer, but I don't think it looks "washed out" at all.

The K3 does not look washed out, but the font in use it too thick on the PW3. That makes it uncomfortable to read with the font showing.

Do you mean the Oasis 3? If so, wow...that's actually one step below the thickness that I usually use. You and I certainly do have different preferences in reading!

I mean the font on the K3 is too thick. It looks a bit artificial. The Oasis 3 looks a lot easier tor ead.

Ah...well, the font on the K3 is just the standard serif font installed on the Kindle, with no enhancements.

My first Kindle was a used Kindle Touch. I didn't like it, the font was too light and I was used to my dark fonts on the Nook Simple Touch. So I gave the Touch to my brother and bought an NT4. I liked that one a lot. (Still like it, though I need to replace the battery now.) The fonts may not have been perfectly formed but they were dark and clear and I did more eBook reading on that eReader than on any other. My father has read thousands and thousands of pages on the Kindle Keyboard I sent him several years ago. Later I found out that you could add darker fonts to a Kindle Touch, and that made all the difference.

Once I found out how to adjust the font darkness on the Sony Readers I've come to realize that they did do a nicer job of rendering fonts, but (for me) the Nook Simple Touch Kindle NT4 and Kindle 3 fonts are fine. Definitely dark enough. And, in some ways, I still like them better. Less fiddling with fonts, more reading.

I found that compared to the 650, the nook STR did a terrible job rendering fonts.The Sony did an excellent job rendering fonts.

Look at the specs in our wiki for E Ink display

contrast Vizplex 7:1 (typical) Pearl 10:1 (minimum) Carta 15:1

There was an earlier screen but I never caught its name. It was 8:1 contrast typical but had only 4 gray levels.

I thought Vizplex was the first generation of the eInk screens though the name was also used to refer to the early Pearl and Triton displays. The early controllers only handled 2 bits per pixel so 4 level gray scale.
