Here let me remind you of your own words, since you appear to have forgotten them already: Quote:
As we've seen the typical battery life for these devices is measured in years, with the average being over half a decade, longer if wifi is off and so on. Further, because of these changes we've also seen water resistance being added, and while you may not care about that feature, there's evidence enough that people do care. If the manufactures were truly conspiring to make you replace your ereader along the lines of the battery, they'd not release new generations of devices so frequently. That's R&D money, it's marketing, it's getting through all the regulations, etc. that would be (for a nefarious manufacture) better spent lining their coffers. Then they put out a marginally improved device every 6-7 years or so when the majority of batteries are starting to show their age. Instead we're getting device refreshes every 2 years or so, a rather drastic difference from when consumers would be looking to replace their ereader when the battery died. |

what you call a refresh i call basically the same static ereader with a few minor enhancement's/feature's. water resistance (as you say) and the Comfort Light Pro orangey/yellowy light. i accept that people have different opinions than me and may want these features, therefore i don't feel the need to call them a fool just because they have an opposing opinion to mine. by all means question my comments/opinion if you disagree with me that's the whole point of any forum, but there is no need to call someone a fool just because you don't agree/like what they are saying. of course it's entirely up to how you conduct yourself on here. personally i believe in taking on the point the person is making rather than using abusive words like fool. i believe in politeness at all times. best wishes koboy ![]() |

It's also hardly just the comfort light, or water resistance that have been added since the batteries were non-replaceable. The Kobo Touch featured a whopping 800x600 Pearl e-ink screen at an amazing 170 PPI with 2gb storage (I'll grant it had an additional SD card slot), and weighed in at 200g, note there was no frontlight. It was released in 2011 which puts it just on the inside of the longer battery life. The Glo and the Mini were released the next year upping the screen resolution and adding the frontlight. And while this forum is generally no guide for the market, there are folks here still using the Glo and Mini happily, possibly the Touch as well. And it's more likely that this reflects the market because non-enthusiasts tend not to upgrade as frequently. Again, you're entitled to your opinion, but if you're unable or unwilling to back that opinion up with anything besides restating it well, words are wind. |

these words i am familiar with and stand by them. a cynic would say it's in the manufacture's interest to use a non-replaceable battery, and glue it in just to make it even harder for the owner/user to be able to change it for a new one when the need arises. the battery is purposely glued in, effectively making ereaders made that way disposable products for the average user. that/my opinion is backed up by the fact that's it's glued in. defend the practice as much as you want, but for me it's self explanatory. best wishes koboy ![]() |

So, you're unwilling or unable to defend your view. Thanks for clarifying that. |

it appears you missed my opinion/view. here it is again slightly enhanced. the battery is purposely glued in, effectively making ereaders made that way disposable products for the average user. that opinion is backed up by the fact that's it's glued in. defend the practice as much as you want, but for me it's self explanatory. that's my view and it's backed up by the (fact) that the battery is indeed glued in. best wishes koboy ![]() |

No one is debating that the battery is glued in. No one is debating that this was a choice made. What was being debated was that this was some plot by the companies selling these devices to force them into upgrading needlessly. Your one and only comment has been that the battery is glued in. Which again, just to make sure you understand and don’t miss it, was never being debated. Now if it were some plot by said companies it makes no sense for them to spend money producing new devices as often as they are. Regardless of if you care about the features added the adding of them and release of new products costs money. So I’ll stand by the statement that you are either unable or unwilling to defend your claim that this is some plot to force consumers into upgrading. You are of course entitled to whatever opinion you want. It’s just unfortunate that you aren’t producing anything to support it. |

Is that me with my dream kobo (which includes a compartment for AA batteries; typing by voice; color eink; 100GB storage; ability to write on screen just like you can mark a paperbook with pen or pencil; a still-clunky web browser so that the temptation to surf is low)?

if you don't believe the non-replaceable battery is glued in to make the ereader a disposable product then please enlightenment me to why they choose to do it that way? best wishes koboy ![]() |

AA Batteries - nope (You might be able to rig up an AA battery pack though) Type by voice - yep color eink* - yep provided the base ebook has color coding in it *obviously not eink though 100gb storage - you could get 1TB of storage if you wanted ability to write on the screen - yep still clunky web browser - I'm sure there's an absolutely terrible browser you can find the .apk for and toss it on as the default (and maybe only?) browser |

As to why they'd drop replaceable batteries 1) less chance for the consumer to foul something up 2) cheaper to do overall, they wont need to have CS teach people how to replace the battery, they wont be pressured into carrying the battery that fits into the specific devices, etc 3) arguably a better feeling device since the casing will be more solidly together (yes this is subjective in terms of how effective it is, but the feel of ereaders is a part of the reviews for better or worse). I'll note you've still not actually backed up your claims, nor refuted any of mine. Until you do, I'll be returning the treatment. |
