Perhaps I should rant that Kobo seems to think it will take me 6 times as long to read a book as it will actually take. Am I supposed to finish the book and then wait 3 hours before starting the next book?

No, you're supposed to linger on the last page these 3 hours.

Yeah, but it feels so good to nail it, and finish your book right at the last second, every time. Makes one feel so proud of themselves!

Wow, so you were so caught up in proving that your assumptions were correct that you went to all that effort. Amazing. Kind of confirms my impression of you.

Still doesn't change that in November, the last time that I bought a new iPad and loaded my library on it, those were the steps I went through to get around it and in the past when I simply deleted a book from one of my devices and tried to download on a new device, I still got the past limit error.

Who are you trying to kid, buddy? Our impressions of each other have been cemented for a long, long time.

And what effort? Computers are what I do. Testing things and grabbing screenshots is like pouring a glass of milk.

The simplest explanation for this is that you didn't actually delete the book from your other device in a way that Amazon noticed.

The limit is, and always has been, on simultaneous usage. Amazon won't let you download onto more than the stated number of devices simultaneously.

If you delete a book from a device while it's not connected to the internet, Amazon won't know that you've deleted it, and it will still count, until you connect the device to the internet and it synchronises with the Amazon servers.

I don't know for sure, but it may also make it easier and quicker for Amazon to know that you've deleted it if you do it from the device, rather than by plugging it into your computer and doing it from there.

The device has to sync up with the Amazon servers to reflect any changes made to the device. This isn't always an instant thing. Deleting a book from the device, using the device menus to do so, is the best way in this scenario. Removing books using a computer's file management system causes problems, because the Kindle itself won't recognize the change in storage space. I imagine, but don't know for sure, that this would also create problems when attempting to sync with Amazon servers.

I've used Kindles since 2009, and I've never had to remove/deregister a device in order to free up a book simultaneous license. Delete using the device menus, sync, and wait a few minutes, has worked each time.

I do know some users report needing to contact Amazon to get this to work correctly, at least some of the time. That is sometimes the case for users with spotty WiFi. In those cases, the Amazon CS person was able to take care of it right then, and the book was freed to be downloaded to another device.

I liberate almost all of my books from DRM now and store them in Calibre, so this is no longer an issue for me. Bumping into the simultaneous license restriction has only happened to me a few times, with reference type books. At last count, I had 10-12 devices registered to my account.

Based on the feedback I should have titled this thread "Simultaneous Download Limits". It might have been clearer as to what I was referring to. I have added the word "simultaneous" in two spots in my original post. Apparently only moderators can change a thread title.

That last sentence is a definite possibility. It's also possible that it was a propagation delay in refreshing the info on the servers since I deleted, then immediately tried to add. Either way, removing a device from the device list works as well. It's my preferred method when I upgrade devices.

If you dispose of a device, it does make sense to remove it from your device list.

It makes a lot of sense, but my issue is remembering to do so.
