I think most of the effort goes into areas that people use. For example, there still seems to be effort in the various Kindle deDRM. It's the issues with small slivers of the market that's the problem. B&N is a pretty small sliver of the market. I also think that issues that have a work around don't get much effort either. There isn't a lot of effort on the Apple side or working with the current version of ADE either, but you can use older versions to get the job done.

Just for clarification, the tools/plugins work for the current version of ADE (using ADE and downloading from Kobo, Google (I assume), ...).

Not according to the readme.

The is archive includes tools to remove DRM from:

- Kindle ebooks (files from Kindle for Mac/PC* and eInk Kindles**).
- Adobe Digital Editions (v2.0.1***) ePubs (including Kobo and Google ePubs downloaded to ADE)
- Kobo kePubs from the Kobo Desktop application
- Barnes and Noble ePubs
- Adobe Digital Editions (v2.0.1) PDFs
- Scuolabooks (Link to solution by Hex)
- Mobipocket ebooks
- eReader PDB ebooks
- Rocket ebooks (source only)

Current Adobe Digital Edition is 4.5.11. ADE v2.0 does not work with the current version of Mac OS.

Regardless of the readme, it does work with ebooks ADE downloaded from Kobo.

Gack, perish the thought. Hopefully there will be enough interest/need that someone will make it work with that Calibre. It's open source so it just needs nimble fingers to do the job.

My main concern is due to the large number of changes needed in order to make it Python 3 compatible. Because the file formats involved are all binary data and there are significant differences in that between Python 2 and 3, I suspect that it will take many hours of work to fix the plugin.

Then there is the problem of testing all of the features of the plugin to see if the changes have broken them. There is no test suite or existing collection of all of the file types that are needed for testing.

There's nothing in the readme that indicates it wouldn't work, in my mind.

KindleUnpack has been Python3 compatible (and backward-compatible with Python2) for years. The portions that deal with parsing the binary db and the EXTH header would be much the same for both. It shouldn't take all that long since there's already a basic roadmap to follow for dealing with all the binary mobi data structures. At least for the KindleBook side of things anyway.

I think they're making a mistake by dropping support for the standalone tools, myself. It's much easier to debug standalone python scripts. Plus there's no need to get new contributors "up to speed" on calibre's plugin api and plugin dev best-practices just to start offering assistance. Bringing everything under one roof has been great for users, but it's killed the notion of the "casual contributor" to the codebase. But it's their decision. No skin off my back. *shrug*

You can use ADE 4.5.x with the current tools if the site you are downloading from either has not upgraded their Adobe Content Server or has not enabled the newer Adobe hardened DRM on their upgraded ACS.

I only received one epub with the new DRM when I was testing with a newer version of ADE.

I can confirm that the tools work with ADE 4.5.11 on macOS Catalina provided the vendor is not using the newer Adobe hardened DRM.

Hum, you are correct sir. Just installed the most recent ADE, bought a book at Kobo, downloaded it into ADE, added it to my Calibre library with no problem. Downloaded it to Marvin on my iPad and it comes up with no problem. Live and learn.

Whatever, all I know is that I don't use ADE, I simple have my Sony For PC (which is the 2.0.1 version) download the book, then I tell Calibre to go get the book from Sony and Calibre has never failed to disinfect it. For epubs I shop at Kobo.

YES! Smashwords maintains a library of your purchases and free downloads you have made and once a item is in your library it can be downloaded in all formats the book is offered in by Smashwords. Formats available do vary by author. No DRM on any Smashwords files so they can be installed on multiple readers and devices. I own Kindle, Kobo, Nook, Sony and Ectaco readers so this is a consideration, particularly as the Sony and Ectaco readers have no remaining support and the Ectaco reader has USB only for installing new books. Sony WiFi is pretty useless too without any support source.

I believe that TOR and Baen books purchased direct from the publishers web sites are also DRM free as are books downloadable from this forum and books from Gutenberg and other public domain book sources.
