I don't use PHP though so I don't know about it.

How is that fun? It's a lot more fun to just do it with Calibre and let Calibre deal with the collections. Then you can get to reading sooner.

I guess collections on a Kindle are okay if you're adding them slowly, one at a time, as you go along. If I understand that right. But what if you have an existing collection you wish to sideload?

Add only one collection of books to the Kindle.
Eject
Add all the most recent books to new or desired collection.

Don't sync as it can mess up Collections.

You need a registered Kindle to create Collections.

Obviously most people manually add new titles to Collections manually on Calibre and may often edit the Tag metadata as it's often nuts.

I prefer managing collections on Calibre and using the Kobos. More than a hundred books is a pain to manage on every make / firmware of ereader or android app I've ever used. The developers should be made to use a professional library/document management system and sort 2,000+ books on an eReader that are randomly added.
They should implement nested categories/collections and have a file/collection manager too. All the standard book categories should exist. Tags should NOT automatically create Collections (Sony madness), but be searchable too.

Management and search on EVERY ebook reader/app apart from Calibre is a disaster. It's obnoxious of Amazon that they removed ability of various user settings, have a large minimum margin and crippled Collection management to really be only via a registered Kindle and your Amazon Account device settings on the Web.

NO ereader should depend on the Internet or a server for functionality. A stupidity also on some BluRay discs.

To answer the question, some might say that what's so bad about a Kindle is Amazon for not standing up to Apple and price fix six to get Agency pricing done away with.

First, that really has very little to do with Kindles. Second, if the major publishers had stopped selling on Amazon (a couple did until Amazon gave in) Amazon would have lost their position in the book business.

There's nothing wrong, of course, in blaming anyone you like for anything you like. Why not blame Amazon for high medicine prices. Or maybe they could have prevented Lincoln's assassination if they'd only invented a time machine.

How does one get a book from Calibre into the Kobo? email is convenient but has now become much less convenient with Kindle since it now involves receiving and verifying a confirmation email from Amazon.
So...I just did a test, and I didn't have to verify a book sent from my email. If I email the book from Calibre, however, I have to verify it. There must be something different that Amazon can see that tells it that it is coming from Calibre, rather than from any other email client.

I always sideload books from Calibre. Simple and effective.
Last year I converted several books to epub in order to put them on a Kobo Mini I gave a friend for Christmas. I just sideloaded them.

I understand. I generally don't sideload using USB, preferring to send them to the cloud instead, since I use multiple readers. I have a 3G capable Voyage that I keep in my purse all the time, and I really appreciate being able to have it synced with whatever Kindle I'm reading on at home. I mostly use my Kobo for Pocket articles or short stories since I can't sync it with my other readers.

While everyone has personal preferences for features, hardware and firmware, there is one important "feature" I have not seen mentioned here. Customer service. Having owned both Kobos and Kindles, Amazon without a doubt, IMHO, is far superior to Kobo. I found dealing with Kobo's CS to be a dreadful and unfruitful experience each and every time. Amazon, OTOH, provides pretty painless and flexible customer service. In my case, that would be ten plus years of experience with Kindles.

Sadly, the Kindle's experimental browser seems too limited to work with the Dropbox website. Tried just now and I can't even log in.

Dunno about Google Drive or One Drive.

Personally, I'm very happy with Amazon's CS; not just for kindle issues, but for everything. I like their Chat feature. If you have someone who doesn't appear to understand the problem, just ask for someone more technical.

I've never had any experience with Kobo CS.

I've never had a need to contact Kobo CS. My H2O has never had a problem.

Kindles has issues with books not downloading with the book thumbnails which drives me nuts. You have to then take it off your device then hope it will eventually refresh with image thumbnails then you can download it. Also I get download complete message when in fact book is not downloaded at all. You will never have that with a KOBO.

Kobo you can rent library books direct from the device, more customization abilities with fonts, page, margins .. etc, and books download with no hang-ups. And the best of all is battery life lasts 10 times longer than the kindles.

I own Nooks, Kobos, and Kindles. The Oasis I love but if you want the very best quality in an entry-level device the KOBO Clara HD winds hands down compared to Kindle basic and paperwhite. It is faster than the paperwhite and the quality and feel is so much better. If you buy a kindle go for the Oasis. If you need a cheaper model go with the Nook or the Kobo Clara.

I also Have the Nook 7.8" and love it more than the Basic Kindle and the paperwhite.
