Okay, my mistake. I went the wrong way on which was which. I'll upgrade. But now I see 4.18.x is out. Maybe I'll hold off and wait for the thread on that one.

The thread exists for the new 4.18.x firmware. The patches, not yet.

Yes, the header showing the chapter title and pages (screens) is new to 4.17. But, 4,17 is no longer the new firmware. 4.18.x is now the new firmware.

I find paging to not be an issue at all on my H2O reading ePub. In fact, I prefer the ADE page numbers for the full book. Plus, I prefer the better layout. You now get chapter paging that works 1 page is one screen. so if it shows 1 OF 10, that's 10 screens.

ADE has better page numbering. This means that if you read on a nook or a Kobo you can have the exact same page numbers.

No, because Jon has it wrong. Or at least extremely badly described.

In 4.17, Kobo added displaying the chapter progress in the header while displaying the book progress in the footer. This works in all formats.

Epubs still use the Adobe page numbering. That is for both full book and chapter paging.

For kepubs, the full book page count uses the same method as the chapter page count. So, one page per screen. The chapter page count is unchanged. The full book count used to be calculated using 320 words per page.

Thanks for that. I had a feeling, but since I haven't loaded an ePub on my Kobo in a long time I didn't want to argue.

I wish they hadn't done that. The chapter page count now being in the header instead of the footer is why I haven't updated past 4.15.

The four page turn buttons are what I like best about the Nook. I tried the new PW4 when my Voyage died. That is when I realized that I change hands constantly when I read. On the PW the bezels were so small that I kept turning pages inadvertently. I think that having to rotate my reader every time I change hands would be very distracting.

I have to agree with cgsmom. I switch from left to right to both often without thinking. I also have inadvertent page turns with a paper white as I move my hands around while reading.

I was at B&N yesterday. The nooks are one side of the customer service desk with no signs, and the small nook demo wasn't charging so it was dead. The large nook was charged up, and it was very nice to use. The buttons were better than on my old nook e-ink, and the screen was also better. I assume the little nook would have been similar.

So I liked the hardware better than my kindle paper white and old nook e-ink. But, the hardware isn't the whole picture. The software, the online experience, the ease of content transfer, the ability to backup content on my own computer, syncing all your content between devices, borrowing a book from the library.... the so called "ecosystem" is part of it for me as well.

I think the major issue with the Nooks is library borrowing ...

The Nook feels like such a squandered opportunity by B&N. For a while there, they were neck-and-neck with the Kindle. When the ST came out with a lighted screen, it was amazing. That's what finally got me to buy an e-reader.

This is exactly what made me move to Kobo. I've had every Nook e-ink reader device they've had over the years (some better than others), but when the new Glowlight Plus came out with the 7.8" screen, I couldn't bring myself to get one. Despite the higher cost, I got a Forma instead and LOVE it. I also just bought a Libra H2O and am really enjoying it as well since the Forma never leaves my wife's hands anymore.

I loved my Nook ST w/Glowlight. But didn't like the way they were moving with the Nook Glowlight (no SD card and only 500MB for sideloading).

The (2015) Glowlight Plus was a huge improvement, but by then I'd bought a 6" Aura. I did eventually pick up a Plus on eBay and bought a Glowlight 3 for the better half, but I'm a Kobo fan now.

The Nook does feel like a squandered opportunity. I didn't want to spend the money on a Forma so I went with the Nook 7.8 and I like it very much. But it really is a pain to have to sideload everything. I can't liberate Nook Books anymore. If the Libre had been available at the time, I definitely would have bought it. I probably still will at some point.
