Interestingly most of the books I've read have never been turned into movies. There are only two exceptions that I can recall at the moment, and in both cases I saw the movie first: 2010 and The Lost World (JP).

Neither movie were as good as their book counterparts, but at the same time I didn't feel they were bad either.

EDIT: Oh right, I also read The Time Machine. Book first this time. The newer movie had its share of thrills, but left me with an empty feeling. The old movie was good though.

I liked Dark City, but it was indeed a bit....drawn out.

As for the Triffids, thanks for the info. Personally, like the version where a strapping lighthouse keeper is the one to unravel the truth much better than some ivory tower eggheads who unleashing the leafy Frankenstein's monsters on us in the first place.

Hmm...I think that there's something stuck in my cheek.

Lighthouses, and their keepers, are awesome. Professionally speaking, that is.

I haven't really read this thread, so maybe this has already been mentioned, but the first film adaptation of Dune was utter dreck. However, there was a rather good SciFi Channel mini-series that wasn't half bad.

Pretty much all Stephen King movie adaptations except maybe The Green Mile, HP did not do the books justice and most of them left way too much out. The Ruins the movie was also laughable.

Favs of the top of me head are LOTR Trilogy, the Silence of the lamb, Juressic Park and the Sherlock Holmes, Murder She Wrote, Miss Marple Mysteries series they have going on VPT.

Worst: Dean Koontz "Watchers" - good book, movie was terrible. I noticed that one of the TV ratings gave it one-half star - that was WAY too generous.

Agree with you about all Stephen King adaptions, though I did find The Shining entertaining - mostly because of Nicholson. The Stand (TV adaptation) wasn't too bad, though IMO was off the mark from the book.

I haven't really enjoyed many of Stephen King's books lately - kind of got more-of-same-ish to me.

ANY "Charlie Chan" film from the 1930 or 40s. Excellent detective stories turned into grotesque racial-stereotyped parody.
