Saw this article from earlier in the month.

Now why did I spend my cash on that new iPod Touch?

Hint.

The guy further to the left is using his new reader.

The biggest problem with this announcement is that it doesn't happen until 6PM Eastern time. So, I have to wait all day Thursday. Oh well, I think we will know in time for the debate to include questions about it.

Hmm, looking at the ad I'm struck by two things - the waves of text flowing in from the ether (wireless?) and one of the book titles "Water for Elephants" which is currently only available in an ebook format for Kindle. No PDF, LIT, or BBeB.

So I'm gonna say a radically expanded bookstore - perhaps a share with Amazon - and possibly a wireless add-on, maybe using the SD slot and one of the dual memory/wifi cards. Or wifi/bluetooth. And, of course, some form of bookstore firmware. If it's wifi, it would even take care of the mac issue.

I don't see a new reader, not after introducing the 505 into international markets in the last few months. They would be shooting themselves in the foot.

I don't think they would necessarily be shooting themselves in the foot to introduce a new reader if it was not a replacement for the 505. For example, they could probably introduce a wireless version of the 505 at say a $50 or $100 premium over the base 505. Some of us (including me) would be happy to get the basic unit at the lower price.

Granted, this might cause some grumbling in Europe.. but it doesn't mean that the wireless version would be introduced there for a bit yet (after all, wireless seems more important in America where the Sony has to go head to head with the kindle.

BTW, wireless would not take care of the Mac issue. It would mitigate it, but it would not eliminate the fact that at least for DRM'd books, people who buy Sony Readers have no options to read their books if their readers break (I have the same problem with the Kindle). I love the convenience of a dedicated reader, but any format that is supported by a hardware reader can also be supported by a software reader that can be loaded onto a computer.

Honestly, if any of the DRM'd ereader formats was to release software that would work on a linux tablet (again, I refuse to buy windows), I would be tempted to forgo the whole dedicated ereader and just get a Linux tablet and use it as my dedicated ereader.

Why wait two months to announce this? Just add new books to the store.

I may be crazy but I'm smelling a partnership with Amazon, and maybe it's taking some time to get the kinks ironed out.

I just don't see any benefit to Amazon in that partnership. Unless Sony drops their store some how exclusively supports Kindle books or something. It would certainly be nice for Sony users since it would increase there selection of ebooks and the prices. But, you have to think what is "BEST" for the companies here, not the consumer.

The graphics in the Sony announcement all swirl text/titles from books and it all centers around the woman who is holding an eReader. And Sony claims their announcement "open(s) a new chapter on digital reading".

Based on the size of the device in comparison to her hands and body, it is not a larger screen - certainly not a 10 inch screen. The swirling graphics would seem to indicate either a major increase in availability of eBooks (deal with one or more major publishers or a deal with Amazon) and/or WiFi capability.

Anyone know much much available memory there is on the Sony for use for add-on features that would not interfere with the current space used for book storage?

I dunno, back in the day Amazon was this thing called a book store. All things considered, maybe their margins are better on selling ebooks (no stock investment, no shipping ) rather than eBook readers.

If they can attract additional hardware readers to their bookstore, they can sell more of their titles.

I know, it's perverse, a business acting like a business without all sorts of weird hidden motives, stock swaps and interlocking directorships.
