Why, after all these years, is there still no easy way to manage collections?

I still see uses for it. If categories could be organized that way it would be easy to find all history books and all USA history books.

With your method how do you find only books on USA history using those collections?

I understand they are essentially tags, I just have loads of them and for my usage it'd be nice to have it as a folder style system rather than tags

Yes, especially for back issues of periodicals and journals.
