Since you are using the same Adobe ID, DeDRM works just as well no matter what software you use for the download.

And how is ADE any more future proof if you have to lock yourself in to version 2.0.1 to avoid getting the new DRM scheme?

To me, ADE seems less reliable and polished overall. I get incomplete downloads and accidentally create duplicate files. After returning library books, their epub corpses remain in ADE's folder indefinitely. Large downloads often don't finish and don't resume correctly. When I move ADE's window between high DPI and regular windows, the font often gets stuck in a ridiculously tiny size. There are just a ton of annoyances that come with using it.
You don't get it. ADE (Windows or OS X) is not for reading eBooks. It's for downloading ePub or PDF that you then load into Calibre to remove the DRM (if you have the DeDRM plugin correctly set-up). I know you can get duplicate files if you download the same ePub more than once. But all you do is delete the copy you do not want from the ADE library and then go to the ADE directory and delete all files with the same name. As for large downloads not finishing, that's a problem on your computer. It's not a problem with ADE. I never have trouble downloading large eBooks with ADE. The largest ePub I have is 248,041KB. As for the font size, just enlarge it.

What other annoyances are there that are not easy enough to deal with? I don't have these problems that you do. But then, I use Windows and Windows is the best OS for dealing with eBooks.

Just FYI, I'm not trying to attack ADE or push Sony's Reader (which has it's own issues). I just wanted to offer it as an alternative that might be easier to run under Wine, since it is fully functional for me and the things I do with it so I don't understand your blanket proscription of it.

The way I do things is download with ADE, ineptepub for stripping DRM (which is what DeDRM does under the hood anyways), Sigil for slight cleanup, then copy directly to Sony and kindlegen for Kindle.

But I would say that the purpose of ADE is very much for reading books (as well as maintaining your library) if you like to read on PC. I like it better than Calibre's reader for sure.

If you only ever download books with ADE that's not an issue. If you keep your library in ADE, it's not nearly as convenient to track down the duplicate files (since deleting them in the UI doesn't lead to deleting the file) unless you always remember to do both at the same time.

It sometimes fails for me both on Mac (main machine) and Windows (old machine in the basement). This happens most with juvenile picture book PDFs but even ebooks with illustrations can time out.

I also sometimes get errors about not being able to return library books because of license server issues. I think that there is sometimes an issue with Adobe's fulfillment or my stores/libraries.

I would if I could. It looks like ADE doesn't realize it is drawing on a high DPI display so it draws fonts the same number of pixels as it would on a regular 96-ish DPI display. So even extra large font size looks like ant footprints on the screen.

This could very well be an artifact of running old ADE. Maybe recent versions work better in this respect.

Wow, I just tested installing Reader for PC in Wine and tested fetching a book. It worked perfectly!

I got ADE to work in Wine after much ado, and then I upgraded Wine (to see if I could get KindleforPC to work, which I got) and it broke...

Thanks!
