categories? organization? I find that Collections are enough to me for that. Couple that with Search - which scans input for author name, book title or collection - and I'm never at a loss.

Kindles (unless jailbroken) require manual collection management. Kobos can have the collections managed with Calibre.

really? And does Calibre manage whatever you like without any manual input by yourself?

Seriously, I have a laptop somewhere in my closet and I don't remember when was the last time I used it. I'm truly a mobilereader

In my case I use the Calibre series column to automatically create a collection per series.

If a book is correctly meta-data'd: yes.

This says a Kindle has to be jailbroken.

No. It does not say that. It says for Library Collections to be used then the PW2 must be jailbroken.

Exactly. I was saying that Kindles need to be jailbroken to be able to use Calibre to manage collections.

No problem. Glad we are now on the same page.

Originally Kindles could have the collections manages by Libprs (Calibre before is was called Calibre) bu Amazon for some reason (bad idea IMHO) removed the functionality.

The "some reason" was the fact that the data file which stored the collections data was in the user-accessible partition. People would frequently accidentally delete it, thus losing all their collections. To prevent this happening, collections were moved into the internal system partition which isn't visible via the USB connection.

I.e. an entirely sensible change.

So, chosing between two evils then. Accidentally remove all your collection vs not being able to manage collections at all outside the reader.

I personally would have prefered to keep the first. But then, there's a reason I don't own a Kindle...

I imagine that Amazon would have received quite a few complaints from people who'd spent a long time setting up their collections, only to then delete them and be somewhat annoyed by that. They're under no obligation at all to cater to third-party collection-management tools.

You can manage collections outside the reader - you can do so from "Kindle for PC", for example. You just can't do so from tools like Calibre.
