I have two Kobos (HD and Aura One) and several Kindles (out of which I use Paperwhite and Oasis).
I don't patch my Kobo (don't know how) and I use Kepub plugin in Calibre and send kepubs to it (I am not using epubs on Kobo because first time I tried it, they looked more than awful). So my Kobo Aura One - kepubs experience is that it is almost impossible to pull references in the book, be it a nonfiction book with a lot of references or lit fiction (translated or not) which again sometime has references (I am reading translated works of Emile Zola at the moment, and references are one or two per page on average). Apart from that, my main objection to Kobo (coming from experience with Kindle) is the dictionary which is extremely bad compared with Kindle dictionaries (I am not reading dictionaries, I just want to be able to see definitions when I need them). Additionally, again as a Kindle user, highlighting parts of the text and exporting the highlights is really bad on Kobos. Therefore, I use Kindle for nonfiction and for lit fiction with a lot of references, and Kobo Aura One for reading fiction without many references (for which it is my best device because of the fonts and size). So, my reply would be buying Aura One would not be a good idea if it will be the only e-reader for a user who reads nonfiction or other works with references and also for a person who plans to read a lot of books in a language which is not his/her mother tongue |

Like many things in life, reward is often directly proportional to effort expended. A bit more time spent researching the Kobo forums and a bit less complaining in them might just reap some benefits. Who knows what treasures you might discover? On the other hand, if you're looking for a single magic button labeled 'Make my Kobo perfect', well, unfortunately no amount of research will find that for you. |

I have no problems with references in kepubs on the Kobos I have owned or still own, though. Some people report a problem selecting them, but that seems mostly a RMDSK/Epub issue. |

With epubs, pulling up footnotes or endnotes is almost impossible on my H20 and KA1, but with kepubs I have no problems viewing them at all.

Out of curiosity, what are the 5 English-English dictionaries you are currently using? Have been looking into this issue myself. Thanks.

I think this first list are OK to be in the public domain (but I'm not 100% sure): Wordnet, Websters 1913, Chambers 1908, GNU Collaborative International, English Wiktionary Unfortunately the links to the better ones have probably been removed by moderators: Oxford Concise, Oxford English (medium), Oxford English(full), Merriam-Webster Collegiate, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Websters Unabridged |

This actually works well. The issue is that the tap zone for a superscript number referring to a footnote is small. It's the size of the number. And if it was bigger, you would be complaining that the device was inaccurate and triggered a link even though you hadn't actually tapped the link. What you need to do is convince the ebook creators to take advantage of the media and use decent links in their ebooks. Would you please stop demonstrating how little you know about using your Kobo device under the guise of telling people about it's defects? |

I have to think about the last time I've read a book on my ereader that was in my mother tongue... I only read non-Dutch books... I don't even know what dictionaries there are on my Kobo... |

I like Kobo IR touch screen because it just works without problems. Capacitance touch screens I use on phones or tablets often don't respond reliably to my dry finger. Sensitivity adjustment could cure this problem.
