tomsem, I can Google "gmail" and get the sign-in link from there, but it doesn't work. Nor does Wikipedia, for that matter. I tried the gmail links in the mobi Web Bookmarks, no go. What's curious is that it was working a month ago. I don't use the DXG much, and the browser always seemed slower than that of my Kindle Keyboards.
Oh, well. Everything else works! |

I still cannot register and connect to Kindle Store with my K1. It is connecting to a cellular network, as I get 4/5 or 5/5 bars and system time updates (e.g. after battery discharges and resets it to 1/1/1970).
For those who can (with K1 or K2/DX), can you check '411' page (go to Settings, and tap ALT, 4, 1, 1)? I am specifically interested in what 'ESN:' is (mine says '(unknown)'), and what 'Certificate installed:' is (mine says 'no'). I'm assuming the 5 services referenced in the first line are 'UP, UP, UP, UP, UP' and not 'DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN' as on mine. Wish I could get it working again... |

I've heard reports that server have always said "DOWN" for all 5 servers. Mine were certainly down when I couldn't register, and they're still down after I was able to successfully register.
I have no "ESN" entry on my K2s 411 page, but "Certificate:" is "FOUND" I think the "Certificate installed: NO" would imply that you don't have the Kindle Services Update installed for your device. It has to be downloaded and installed manually. |

Also worth noting is an additional (and somewhat delayed) response I received this morning to my original email sent to "Jeff":

So the initial information that my device was too old was apparently "incorrect". ![]() |

I'm looking at my Kindle 3, with 4 bars of 3G, and it still has 5 DOWNS. I have no idea what that means. I'm in Montreal, and 3G is pretty good everywhere.

But thanks everyone for confirming the 411 info. Loop back test (511) is failing as well but that may be normal too. |

Ah ... I see there's no separate "Kindle Services Update" (in addition to having the latest firmware update) for the K1 like there is for the K2/DX. My mistake.

I still can't register my jail-broken K2 international running version 3.2.1 but I finally got the un-jail-broken K2 to register!!! Thank you all for putting up with my technologically retarded rants, and for trying to respond in plain English so that I might understand. Amazon is giving me $50 to let them look at it. Y'all may get the same offer. Here are the e-mail replies from two Amazon techies:
Hello Melanie, I'm Kenneth Sanchez of Amazon's Tech Support Executive Customer Relations. Jeff Bezos received your email and I'm responding on his behalf. We’d like to offer our apologies as the information we initially provided to Douglas was inaccurate, and we continue to support older Kindle models. Over the weekend, we resolved an issue which was impacting a small number of customers’ ability to re-register their devices. We believe the issue you are experiencing might be unrelated and we’d like to look into this. If you’re willing, we can have a Customer Service agent contact you once we investigate this issue further. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please let us know. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience. Regards, Kenneth Sanchez Tech Support Executive Customer Relations Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com Hello Melanie, I've issued a $50.00 promotional certificate to your Amazon.com account, which will automatically apply the next time you order an eligible item sold and shipped by Amazon.com. The promotional certificate doesn't apply to items offered by other sellers on the Amazon.com website and won't cover the purchase of gift cards, sales tax, gift wrap, or additional shipping costs. Your promotional balance doesn't appear in Your Account, but will always display at checkout when you place an order through the Shopping Cart for an eligible item shipped and sold by Amazon. If you place a 1-Click order for eligible Kindle books or other digital products sold by Amazon Digital Services, the promotional funds will apply to your order automatically before another payment method is charged. UPS will pick up your device by tomorrow between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. We will investigate the issue, and send it back to you. Thank you very much for your time. Please don't hesitate about contacting me if you have any questions. We'll be in touch. Regards, Luis Salazar Tech Support Executive Customer Relations Amazon.com |

Hi, again! I mailed both my Kindles back. Amazon kept them for a month, studying them. They finally returned them to me, and both worked great---until I did another factory reset. Now neither will re-register again. The tech told me to type "611" into the settings page, and then told me that my ICCID was corrupted on both devices, causing them to not be able to connect with the 3G network. Anyway, back to square one! They want me to buy a newer device.

From the conversation posts you posted above, they want you to buy something else "Amazon".
Not necessarily a newer device. Did you ask them how to correct the problem yourself? Did you learn anything from trying "(factory)Reset"? |
