On the US site for kindles, there are two boxes.
One says with special offers. The other says without special offers.

Since Amazon.ca does not have two boxes, it is safe to assume no special offers.

As far as first hand experience, I bought my Kindle Basic 2014 (Touch 2) from amazon.ca and it doesn't have ads/special offers. And the sleep cover doesn't work 80% of the time so I definitely would notice.

Yeah oddly enough, they don't have them online at all. But when I popped into a store a week or so ago and was asking to look at an Aura, the sales guy was pretty determined to show me the Kindle they had on display.

Also, on the website the Kobo Glo HD has always said "out of stock online" for me, since I first started shopping around. It also says "online only" but they happened to have one in the store when I went so I guess that wasn't true!

You're totally right! I popped into one today to see if I could finally get a real look at a Kindle and they had a PW3 there. There was no price listed and they had no in stock but they did have a display. Nice to finally see one.

It was sleeker looking than the pictures make it seem. People are right about the fonts though. Your ability to customize is lacking but the Amazon store with its reviews can't be beat.

I would not recommend a Kindle if the person is not in the US and wants to use Overdrive.

I replied about customizing. I cannot say that a new Kindle will be able ot be jailbroken so I cannot say it could be. But a Kobo can be customized (patched) with whatever the latest firmware is for the device.
