OK, you talked me into it. Just copy/paste the patch below into your existing nickel.patch file for fw 4.1.7729 and run GeoffR's Patcher program as normal.
Thank you! The patch works perfect in my glo HD.

The "reduce header" patch works great for me! Thanks! Is there a way to reduce the header by, let's say, 50%?

Update to Custom Header patch

For anyone interested I've updated post #37. There are now 2 patches available:
  • `Custom Header menubar - reduce height by 33%`
  • `Custom Header menubar - reduce height by 50%`

Whether the 50%-reduction will actually result in more lines per screen than the 33%-reduction will depend on your normal font-size/line-spacing choices.

I've also added sample screenshots to post #37 to consolidate all available info about these patches in a single post.

Thank you! Really appreciate it. (33% works best for me, if anyone is keeping track. 50% is too crowded.)

`KePub optimizeLegibility default`

In this thread jackie_w showed how to enable ligatures in KePub books by modifying the book's stylesheet. This patch does the same thing but modifies the device's built-in stylesheet, so it should work with existing sideloaded KePubs and also KePubs synced direct from Kobo.

Edit: See the screenshots in this post for some of the other effects I've noticed. Beware, there are some bad spacing effects with fully-justified text.

This patch should work on all firmware versions from 3.16.0 to 4.1.7729 and maybe later versions too.

`KePub optimizeLegibility default` (paste into libnickel.so.1.0.0.patch):
Spoiler:
Code:
<Patch>
patch_name = `KePub optimizeLegibility default`
patch_enable = `yes`
# Multi-version patch: 3.16.0 - 4.1.7729+
#
## This patch adds the following style to the built-in KePub stylesheet:
##
##   body{text-rendering:optimizeLegibility}
##
## One of the effects is to enable the use of standard ligatures in KePub books
## by default, if the selected fonts support them. There might be other effects.

</Patch>

If you are using the `KePub full justification default` patch then you'll need to replace it with this new version, or else the `KePub optimizeLegibility default` patch won't apply:

`KePub full justification default` (replace the version in libnickel.so.1.0.0.patch):
Spoiler:
Code:
<Patch>
patch_name = `KePub full justification default`
patch_enable = `yes`
# Multi-version patch: 3.16.0 - 4.1.7729+
#
## This patch makes full justification the default for KePub books by adding the
## following to the built-in KePub stylesheet:
##
##   body{text-align:justify}
##
## This only sets the default, if the publisher has set the justification in the
## book's stylesheet then that will override the default, and so you might still
## need to use the justify button on the Aa menu to set full justification.
##
## The advantage of this patch is that using the justify button, which also
## forces some things such as headings to be fully justified instead of
## centred, can be avoided for some books.

`Force user font-family in ePubs`

This patch should make the ePub reader ignore all font-family styles in the book's stylesheet, so that the only font used is the one selected from the device.

It could spoil the formatting of some books because it won't be possible for the publisher to use multiple fonts in the same book, e.g. serif/sans-serif/monospace text will all be rendered with the same font. A better approach would be to edit the book's stylesheet ato selectively change the font-family styles for the main body text and leave other special styles in place, but the advantage of the patch is that it should work with DRM books too.

This is a two-part patch, you need to enable or disable both parts together. It should work on all firmware versions 3.3.0 - 4.1.7729 and maybe later versions too. It hasn't been tested much, so let me know if there are problems.

It should work, I don't know if anyone has tried it on an Aura One yet though. It is best for use in full-screen mode and with books that have been edited to remove any body margin from the stylesheet.

For the Aura One remember to edit the patch to change the step size from 30 to 56:
Code:
# Replacement value: Sets the step-size of the ADJUSTABLE top/bottom margin
# (if any) in quarter-pixels. These suggested values should be very close to
# the 1% step size of the left/right margins set by the slider. Larger values
# will make the top/bottom margins larger than the left/right margins.
# Suggested values:
#   24 (Touch/Mini), 30 (Glo/Aura/Aura2ed), 43 (AuraHD/H2O/GloHD), 56 (Aura One)
replace_int = 50BD70, 1, 30

`KePub text-rendering options`

This is a replacement for the `KePub optimizeLegibility deafult` patch I posted in post #55, it allows the text-rendering style to be set to either optimizeSpeed or optimizeLegibility. optimizeSpeed is the default, you can change it to optimizeLegibility by uncommenting the line at the end of the patch.

See this thread for some discussion of the effects of these settings. In short, from what I have seen fo far:

optimizeSpeed disables kerning and fixes the em-dash justification problem.

optimizeLegibility enables ligatures and kerning, and fixes the em-dash justification problem, but causes additional word- and letter-spacing problems in justified text.

(The em-dash justification problem is where lines containing em-dashes, ellipses, and some other special characters sometimes have a ragged right margin.)

This patch should work on all firmware versions from 3.16.0 to 4.1.7729 and maybe later versions too.

`KePub text-rendering options` (paste into libnickel.so.1.0.0.patch):
Spoiler:
Code:
<Patch>
patch_name = `KePub text-rendering options`
patch_enable = `yes`
# Multi-version patch: 3.16.0 - 4.1.7729+
#
## This patch adds one of the following styles to the built-in KePub stylesheet:
##
##   body{text-rendering:optimizeSpeed     }
##   body{text-rendering:optimizeLegibility}
##
## Both options have the effect of fixing the problem with fully-justified text
## that sometimes results in a ragged-right margin on lines that contain an
## em-dash, ellipsis or other special character.
##
## The optimizeSpeed option disables kerning, even if the font has "old-style"
## kern tables.
##
## The optimizeLegibility option enables standard ligatures and GPOS kerning if
## the selected fonts support them, i.e. "old-style" kern tables are not needed.
##
## BEWARE: The optimizeLegibility option results in some quite uneven word and
## letter spacing when reading fully-justified text.
##
## (optimizeSpeed is the default, see the option at the end of this patch to
## choose optimizeLegibility instead.)

If you are using the `KePub full justification default` patch then you'll need to replace it with this new version, or else the `KePub text-rendering options` patch won't apply:

`KePub full justification default` (replace the version in libnickel.so.1.0.0.patch):
Spoiler:
Code:
<Patch>
patch_name = `KePub full justification default`
patch_enable = `yes`
# Multi-version patch: 3.16.0 - 4.1.7729+
#
## This patch makes full justification the default for KePub books by adding the
## following to the built-in KePub stylesheet:
##
##   body{text-align:justify}
