Or maybe I'm just used to the placement of the "rainbow" now and seeing a slight change (not necessarily better or worse) on the new one just makes it feel like my old ones seems better. Here are some pics...

Old (original one one the left that I'm keeping). The new replacement one on the right that I'm going to send back. Not sure if this helps anyone but I promised an update so here it is.

Sorry the pics are blurry (smart phone in the dark) but it's not to show clarity anyway, but the shadows and rainbow colours. And for what it's worth, I typically read at night in bed with the natural light -- so this is important to me -- and usually at 1% brightness and 90% natural light as per the last comparison photo posted below). So while others may say the new one (on the right) "looks better", for me I read at the settings as shown in the last photo and I think my original one (one the left) looks slightly better at those settings.

*I tried to put the lighting sliders on each reader at exactly the same spots for comparison. As you can see there is a big difference on the first pic at 100% brightness and Zero Natural light.
Sorry to read the replacement is not any better - definitely notice *more* rainbows on it in the last picture on your preferred settings.

That's why I'm sticking with my original one. I'm used to it now. Not a big deal.

Thanks for the update. I was afraid of that so had waited to see what you received. I think the comfort light wasn't quite ready yet. :| Unfortunately that was one of the main reasons for my purchase. I'm going to keep it, though.

I agree. Just not quite perfected yet when it comes to their comfort light technology. But I do like it and find it way more pleasurable to read in bed at night. It was just way to bright and harsh on my Glo so even with the "rainbows" (which you get used to quickly once you are engrossed into your story) it's much easier on the eyes now with the new comfort light.

I think you are doing the right thing by keeping the original - 100% light and 0% natural llight should be cool blue, not warm orange.

There appears to be a huge degree of variation in QC.

Kobo emailed me asking for my address and then I haven't heard anything from them. Hopefully they will send me a replacement without the color variations. But if the alternative is just as bad as the original, I think I might end up returning both and going back to my Oasis. ,sigh

The hilarious part is, they sent me a bubble envelope to return one in. But they packed the bubble envelope in a separate shipment, inside a box that was over 8 cubic feet big (24" x 36" x 24") LOL

You should put the envelope in that box for the return.

Thanks for posting those photos, Catherine. I was waiting and wondering if mine was "normal" and it looks like it is. Love the one you're with and 'alla that. I'll just have to get used to the blotchiness when I read with the natural light at night.

I once got a 12" x 12" × 24" box packed in a 24 x 24 x 60 inch box.
Oh and inside the 12 x 12 x 24 was a thinner cardboard box with almost the same dimensions. (It contained a diaper pail.)
Funny thing was I threw the big box away. It disappeared from the dumpster. 2 weeks later, it was returned to same dumpster.

This was from Amazon.

I find I get lost in my story anyway and don't notice it after a while. So I'm not bothered by a non-perfect screen. Not sure that even exists anyway.

Looking at your last picture, the one on the left looks *exactly* like mine. Dark/green in the bottom corners, a red patch in the middle.

I, too, mostly read at night in the dark, with the warm light.

It bugs me, but I am getting used to it. I still like the lighting on the KA1 better than my original Kobo Aura (HD).

I sent in my request for a replacement a week ago. Haven't heard anything, but with the website saying out of stock until Sept. 30, I didn't really expect to hear anything until they have more to send.

I guess I might need to accept that this is just the way the lighting is.

Just got the email from Kobo CS saying that they are sending me a new device. It will ship in the next 5-7 days (not surprising to me since they were sold out).

Here's hoping it is a better one!
