I had no problem with the "old school" covers either. Perhaps because they were "new school" when I first encountered them (though I've never been much of a cover art aficionado in the first place). That, and the fact that I couldn't care any less if newer generations of readers deprive themselves of the joy of reading great books simply because the artwork on the cover might be "dated." Serves them right if they're that petty, if you ask me. I get tired of all the cover "updating," repackaging, and movie-edition re-releases anyway. They're books, not paintings for the wall. *shrug*

It use to be that you could find most of the older covers online, but they seem to be a lot harder to find these days, at least through the normal supported channels. I guess it's a copyright issue.

Isn't downloading of covers frowned upon, i.e. copyrighted material.

Chances of getting caught? Slim to none. Plus the copyright holder has to sue. That doesn't make it any more legally or morally okay to do. |

Conversely, in the incredibly unlikely event you have trouble from the publisher and they are selling books without the cover as displayed in the eStore then false advertising seems like a worse crime than downloading promotional material. The Steven King books I bought yesterday had no covers - they do now ![]() |

Oh do know if you find a paperback with the front cover tore off, the book was probably never sold and was thrown in a dumpster. All the publishers require is the front cover for proof it wasn't sold.
Note: they will be torn off at exactly the edge. |

There was a farmer's market near where I grew up that had a book stall that sold paperbacks with the front covers torn off. I guess those books were detoured somewhere along the way to the dumpster. |
