I like the Brothers Hildenbrat. Way back when, I use to get the Tolkien calendar by them. I'm old school when it comes to covers. I liked the old style covers. They generally had a look and feel that gave a pretty good idea of what the book was about, at least in the SF&F genre.

I had no problem with the "old school" covers either. Perhaps because they were "new school" when I first encountered them (though I've never been much of a cover art aficionado in the first place). That, and the fact that I couldn't care any less if newer generations of readers deprive themselves of the joy of reading great books simply because the artwork on the cover might be "dated." Serves them right if they're that petty, if you ask me. I get tired of all the cover "updating," repackaging, and movie-edition re-releases anyway. They're books, not paintings for the wall. *shrug*

They can visit her if they like but I don't think they will get much out of her since she is now in a 4" by 6" cardboard box.

I love cover updates because I now read e-books. Then I can choose the cover I like and even change a book I already have, something I could never do with paper books

It use to be that you could find most of the older covers online, but they seem to be a lot harder to find these days, at least through the normal supported channels. I guess it's a copyright issue.

Isn't downloading of covers frowned upon, i.e. copyrighted material.

That depends on the jurisdiction that applies. In general you should assume that you can be sued for infringement of copyright by downloading. In the US it is illegal to download copyrighted images unless the site clearly states that, for example, it is okay to download for personal use, or that images are in the public domain. Fair use cannot be used as defence currently for books (maybe never will).

Chances of getting caught? Slim to none. Plus the copyright holder has to sue. That doesn't make it any more legally or morally okay to do.

If you have bought the book, fair use seems pretty likely to come into play, you've paid for the book but not received the cover.

Conversely, in the incredibly unlikely event you have trouble from the publisher and they are selling books without the cover as displayed in the eStore then false advertising seems like a worse crime than downloading promotional material.

The Steven King books I bought yesterday had no covers - they do now

Oh do know if you find a paperback with the front cover tore off, the book was probably never sold and was thrown in a dumpster. All the publishers require is the front cover for proof it wasn't sold.
Note: they will be torn off at exactly the edge.

There was a farmer's market near where I grew up that had a book stall that sold paperbacks with the front covers torn off. I guess those books were detoured somewhere along the way to the dumpster.

More like penny pinching. A cover can take up more bytes than the text, and the vendors charge by byte count for electronic delivery.
